year, and a wrist-based computing device, already dubbed the iWatch by
Apple followers, are only a few of the things Apple is working on that
may see the light of day in the next few years, says Steven Milunovich
of UBS .
After
perusing Apples patent filings, Milunovich picks out five possible
areas around which Apple has significant patent activity that could
result in new products: an electronic wallet, a smart pen or iPen, new
gaming tech, an iWatch and technology for integrating its mobile devices
with cars. And though he acknowledges that patent applications are
clues but not perfect predictors of Apples potential product plans,Shop

to keep growing.
Although
Apple says that innovation is in its DNA, creating new categories is
difficult, Milunovich said in an investor note yesterday. Finding large
opportunities to provide growth following the unique success of the
iPhone appear nearly impossible.
But
not totally impossible. Cook, speaking at the AllThingsD conference
this week, said Apple is working on incredible new products, though he
declined to say when they might be released. Re-imagining todays
televisions remains an area of great interest to us, while wearable
computing devices like smartwatches are incredibly interesting and could
give rise to profound new gadgets. But smart glasses like Google GOOG
+0.27% Glass will have a difficult time becoming mainstream because most
people dont want to glasses unless they have to, he said.
We
have some incredible plans that weve been working on for a while. We
have incredible ideas. The same culture and largely the same people that
brought you the iPhone, that brought you the iPad, many that brought
the iPod and some that brought the Mac are still there, Cook said in a
keynote conversation with WSJ columnist Walt Mossberg and AllThingsDs

With
its more than 500 million iTunes users, Apple already has a potential
audience for an e-wallet powered by an iPhone that is the first to

and in new types of games, with the pen providing feedback in the form

Time for the great outdoors in Medina: What's Brewing
My
team and I walked around Wolf Creek Park Sunday checking blue bird
boxes and recording the contents of the boxes. We found only one of the
12 boxes on our route that contained baby bluebirds. Another box held
eight little blue eggs, but other teams had recorded that the eggs had

At first I was delighted to receive recognition for my hard work, then I realized that if I fail to maintain the bed, the whole world will know who is slacking off. Bobbie admitted to me that she had guilt trips in mind when she designed the tiles.

This year we were lucky to have a hardy group of volunteers C two boy scouts along with several board members and some other members. Treemasters Tree Service had dumped a load of donated mulch earlier in the week, so we edged, trimmed, and weeded, then mulched. I transplanted some daylilies from one side of the house to a bald spot near the sign in the front yard while Carole Feron planted some new hostas in a naked area beside the house. I enjoy driving by and admiring the fruits of our labor.
Phil and I attended the district track meet Friday night. Last year we practically drowned because it poured for at least an hour while the officials decided whether or not to cancel the meet. This years meet was held in sunshine and blue skies and temperatures around 30 degrees. We nearly froze. We go to meets because we like to support our son who is one of the girls coaches, but also because we love to see the athletes perform. They are healthy, disciplined, confident, and having fun.
I attended another end-of-the-school year event with some lady friends, but this event was indoors. We went to Show Time, the annual musical spectacular presented by the choral department at the high school. As usual, we were impressed by the talent of the students and the professionalism of the production. The choreography was especially delightful this year. Again, we witnessed high school students who were healthy, disciplined,How cheaply can I build a ventilationsystem? confident, and having a great deal of fun. All these young people are building memories that will stay with them forever.

Many patients in the city's psychiatric hospitals had been looking forward to the introduction of a new law this month.Elpas Readers detect and forward 'Location' and 'State' data from Elpas Active RFID Tags to host elevatorparts platforms. Although the new law, which came into effect on May 1, means that a patient should be discharged from a psychiatric hospital after recovery if he or she wants to leave, only 18 of the 70 patients that met this condition have actually been discharged from the Shanghai Mental Health Center in Pudong New Area this month.
The hospital houses twice the number of patients it should. The doctors and nurses work overtime trying to care for the patients. The big stumbling block is the patients' families who are often reluctant to accept family members back home after treatment.
The hospital has been trying to contact the families of the other 52 patients who can now leave, but the families are proving elusive - changing their phone numbers, moving addresses and remaining difficult to contact.
The situation is the same for many of the mental health institutions in Shanghai with a legal expert suggesting that the hospitals are caught between a rock and a hard place - they could be taken to court if they release the patients and they could also face legal penalties for continuing to keep patients who might be released.
The Shanghai Mental Health Center in Pudong is packed. The high-rise center was designed to accommodate 450 patients at the most but now it cares for more than 800 patients, Sun Xirong, the vice president of the center, told the Global Times. She said that the majority of the patients had come to the hospital against their will, and 90 percent were suffering from schizophrenia.
Sun led the Global Times reporter around the wards on the fifth floor of the building. The entire floor used to be hospital management offices but is now used for patients. Access to the floor requires an elevator smart card which lets people reach the floor where they need another key to open the iron-barred gate to the actual wards.
In the wards there is no furniture - only beds closely packed next to each other so that the patients can only move around with difficulty. After lunch most of the patients were resting.
Wang, a managerial officer from the center, explained: "Many of the 70 patients that could be discharged under the new law have lived in this hospital for more than a decade and are now quite stable." She said that many families refused to take their relatives home because they were afraid they might suffer relapses. Others just left the patients in the hospital because it was inconvenient to collect and care for them.
Chen Dinghua, the center's president, told local media that patients from poor families were given an allowance from the government, and most of their medical bills were waived. "Families with financial difficulties only need to pay 12 yuan ($1.95) a day to cover their board."

Most referees starting out will begin with the games of young children. It's very important that the ref do a good job plus enjoy the experience -- otherwise, the ref could quit before his or her career really begins.
Previously, I wrote about dealing with adults, the main issue when there is one in officiating young kids games. Yet there is another potential problem for the ref with young kids games -- the young child who does not know how to play well with other kids or to behave. This kid pushes the other kids and yells at them. A referee might only see this player in 5% of young kids’ games but it’s important to spot this player early and know what to do. When this type of young child is on the field, the referee’s presence can make all the difference in the world between an enjoyable experience for everyone and something very different.
It’s important that the ref cheat the diagonal so he or she is as close to the problem player as possible, especially when that player is near the ball. This should not be difficult as the field is much smaller in young kids games. By being close to the player, the ref should easily spot fouls and being close might prevent that player from committing continuous fouls.
Should there be a pattern of fouls committed by the player, the ref blows the whistle hard and tells that player, so everyone on the field can hear, that bad behavior will not be tolerated. The smart coach will substitute the player and talk to him or her to calm down. This hopefully will do the trick. But if the player continues to misbehave, the ref has no other choice but to reach into the pocket and produce a card.
Sadly, I’ve had to send off two young boys during the course of my referee career.Can you spot the answer in the rtls? I generally do not get questioned about players getting red cards but in both cases, an adult approached me after the game to vehemently protest that I shouldn’t send off a young kid. If memory serves me right, both were boys U-11 players.

I sent off the player for violent conduct.

Finally on the lighter side, at the coin toss before the game, give your coin to the home team captain, ask the visiting team captain if he or she wants heads or tails, tell the home team captain to toss the coin in the air and let it hit the ground. The ref let me toss the coin!”

If there’s a way to get the coin to wind up heads or tails after being tossed and hitting the ground (where it could roll over upon impact), none of these young kids have figured it out and neither have I.
"There's now a significant motivation for people to hack whatever they can get into, it's only a matter of time before everyone is attacked. It's a numerical fact."
McAfee Asia-Pacific SMB manager Robbie Upcroft told SmartCompany the statistics from the survey of 200 Australian businesses reflect a growing trend among SMBs.
"The sensational headline is SMBs are under attack,Automate patient flow and quickly track hospital assets and people using lampshade. but this isn't too far from the truth. If you think about the way cyber criminals are operating, they're going to go where they can make an easy buck.
"Many SMBs don't know or appreciate that the threat is real and that it could happen to them and, worryingly, many don't have policies or procedure in place to combat this growing threat," he says.
"For example, in many smaller businesses employees have the ability to dial in from home, but sometimes they don't think about what happens when a person is fired and they don't have procedures in place to have the remote access is switched off, so the former employee still has access to all the company information," he says.
"These include things like external spam filters, not running webservers in house and putting basic firewalls in place and anti-virus software."
The survey also found two thirds of respondents had experienced an electronic attack in the form of a virus, worm or Trojan in the last 12 months. Almost one in three had also been subject to Ransomware (an external threat where a cybercriminal blocks access to a business's valuable data and charges it a fee to access the information).
Of the 30% of those surveyed coming into contact with Ransomware, 36.1% had paid money to the criminals to retrieve the data.
On top of the digital threats, many businesses have also lost data via the theft of a laptop, notebook, desktop PC or USB. Of those surveyed 47% of SMBs had had a laptop or PC stolen and 58% had a company USB or portable hard drive stolen.
Upcroft says SMBs need to invest in technology to avoid having "gaps in your armour".
"You don't have to spend much, but all small businesses need to think about ways they can protect their information."
Upcroft says computers and USBs should all be password protected and within organisation people should only have access to information vital to their jobs. He says cyber attacks are going to continue to increase at a "fairly steep rate".

On top of the digital threats, many businesses have also lost data via the theft of a laptop, notebook, desktop PC or USB. Of those surveyed 47% of SMBs had had a laptop or PC stolen and 58% had a company USB or portable hard drive stolen.
Upcroft says SMBs need to invest in technology to avoid having "gaps in your armour".
"You don't have to spend much, but all small businesses need to think about ways they can protect their information."
Upcroft says computers and USBs should all be password protected and within organisation people should only have access to information vital to their jobs. He says cyber attacks are going to continue to increase at a "fairly steep rate".

Senior citizens struggle with mounting debt
It
used to be that many Americans entered retirement having paid off their
mortgages and most of their other debts. This should have been senior
citizens' Golden Years.
Nowadays, more and more people over the age of 65 are struggling with mounting debt levels, fueled primarily by mortgages and credit cards. The average debt held by senior citizens has ballooned to $50,000 in 2010, up 83% since 2001, according to Federal Reserve data crunched by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
"They had more debt in their working years and they've carried it over into retirement," said Craig Copeland, senior research associate at the institute.
Much of this is due to an increase in housing-related debt. Families headed by someone at least 60 years old had the largest increase in average mortgage debt, in terms of percentage, between 2000 and 2012, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve.
It's not because more older Americans bought homes, said Bill Emmons, an economist with the St. Louis Fed. Instead, they borrowed big against their houses. Some took out home equity loans, while others refinanced and took out cash, but also extended the term of their mortgages.
Money was easily available before the credit crisis in 2008 and it was cheap. Some senior citizens used the funds to make home repairs, pay for vacations or help their children, while others put the proceeds in the stock market, figuring they could make a lot more money.
Only 24% of homeowners over the age of 62 had mortgage debt in 1992, but that figure soared to 45% in 2010.
"Virtually everyone borrowed more because of availability and incentives," Copeland said. "Surprisingly, older people got the bug too."
Credit card debt has also become more pervasive among seniors. One-third of them are relying on plastic to cover basic living expenses, according to Demos, a public policy organization that advocates for lower- and middle-income Americans.
Some consumer advocates say that the increasing debt load among the elderly could pose big problems, especially since seniors are more likely to have growing medical costs and less likely to be still working.
"If people are relying on credit cards to pay living expenses, it's difficult to see how that turns around if they aren't earning additional income," said Amy Traub, senior policy analyst at Demos.
Increased debt loads have forced some seniors to keep working. Janice Jessup, 79, collects Social Security and also works as a real estate agent in Virginia Beach. But she says her Social Security checks are not enough to cover her expenses. So she's racked up more than $10,000 in credit card debt in recent years to get by and to fund her business.
