A smart device to keep track of heartbeat

When Joy was discharged from hospital, she was given an odd-shaped laptop device with a router. Thanks to this device, all she has to do is to sit comfortably at home, within five metres of the device.

The device picks up data from her pacemaker and transmits it to her doctor, senior consultant electrophysiologist, at Madras Medical Mission, Ulhas Pandurangi. Its most certainly a good thing for me. I live in the other corner of the city (to the hospital). Id have to spend a whole day to go in for a consultation, says the elderly woman.

Remote monitoring is probably the most innovative and cost-effective modality of heart failure therapy so far, Dr. Pandurangi says. It obviates the need for a physical examination C the consequent travel and time taken for it. Persons who have undergone surgery might not be up to all this effort. The mini computer given to a patient is capable of transmitting information about the heart, and picking up abnormalities even before the patient begins to feel the effects.

The device communicates via a SIM card which picks up the mobile service available in the area, secures data and sends it to a server in the Netherlands. This is then sent to Dr. Pandurangis office in Mogappair in any form he wishes to receive C mail, text message, alerts via a mobile application or voice mail. To ensure that this does not make his work even more complex than it is, he has a team of personnel working on it. Red alerts, triggered in a crisis, are sent to him for immediate attention.

Patients feel a lot more secure all the time, Dr. Pandurangi adds. The patient can travel and still be connected to the doctor, if he just carries his device around. A representative of the manufacturer of the device (CareLink), Medtronic, informs that there are about 10 patients in the country with assistive gadget to help read and send data from their implantable device.

It costs between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 1.5 lakh, depending on the implant the patient has. The mobile service charges are free for the patient. At the moment,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. the constraint is that this gadget can be used only along with Medtronics implants. But we hope more manufacturers will come in and the scene becomes competitive, so that the patient benefits.

Ajit Mullasri, director, Cardiology, MMM, says from the point of view of scientific research,Laser engraving and laser customkeychain for materials like metal, data from these devices might also indicate the factors that might precipitate problems in patients with heart failure.

Tiempo, expert in the design of secured clockless chips, has initiated the collaborative project ASMART with several added value partners to develop an innovative smartcard chip prototype. This chip will combine Tiempo secured clockless platform with CEA-Leti innovative contactless interface and Invia best-in-class security sensors. It also embeds a secured operating system developed by Gemalto, world leader in Digital Security, in order to effectively demonstrate the benefits of Tiempo unique asynchronous technology for secured contactless applications. Further on, the chip will be characterized by Presto Engineering and manufactured on the new 110 nm eFlash process developed by LFoundry Rousset.

Tiempo asynchronous circuits offer unmatched benefits for secure transactions, such as very high hardware resistance to side channel and perturbation attacks as well as a natural adaptability to the energy-constrained context of contactless smartcards, always delivering maximum processing speed under limited and variable power budget.

With the fast growth of contactless payment, transit and ID markets, the next generation of smartcard products faces the difficult compromise between improved security and faster transaction. The properties of Tiempo asynchronous logic shall allow achieving fast and secure contactless transactions, even under low or variable magnetic field intensity.

After one day of living only on Bitcoin, Ive become very tired of having to walk everywhere. The San Francisco public transportation system wont accept my digital tokens. I contacted Lyft, Sidecar and Uber to see if any of those tech savvy ride services would take my virtual coin, but to no avail. (Fred Ehrsam of Bitcoin exchange company Coinbase mentioned that hes in talks with a ride-sharing or Cgiving company about accepting Bitcoin but wouldnt say which one, and regardless, it wouldnt help me much this week.) When I inquired about paying in Bitcoin at a bike rental place, the clerk responded, Bit what?

I asked Reddits Bitcoin subreddit for help finding transportation. One person offered to rent me his bike for .05 BTC for the week. As that was only $6 at the time, I wasnt surprised when he said he was kidding and revealed that he lived in Georgia. Another Redditor named WillworkforBTC offered to fill up a Clipper Card C San Franciscos smart card for public transportation C for me allowing me to get around by bus, ferry and subway, but that seemed like cheating. Another Redditor offered to chauffeur me personally, but then disappeared when I asked him how much he would charge.

When I mention this problem to colleagues and friends, a solution immediately presents itself. Four different people offered to rent me their bikes for the week.Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. I give thanks for the peer-to-peer economy, and the opportunity to become a bike commuter again; I was one in NYC and DC before my bikes rear wheel had an unfortunate encounter with a tram track in Washington which could not be remedied by a bike shop.We offer over 600 chipcard at wholesale prices of 75% off retail.

A good handful of the people I know are actually excited at the prospect of owning some Bitcoin; in San Francisco, at least, theres a bit of a cool factor around being a crypto-coin carrier. A friend at EFF quoted me a price of .25 BTC for the week (which was about $36 USD when he quoted it), set up a wallet to take my coin, and lent me a totally serviceable bike with so-so brakes. So on Wednesday morning, I left the house with 3.Compare prices and buy all brands of luggagetag for home power systems and by the pallet.75 BTC in my digital wallet, and got to work in just 20 minutes. This is great for in-city commuting, but Im not sure how Im going to get to my brother-in-laws birthday party in Mill Valley on Saturday its a very hilly, four-hour round trip on a bike.
