The main objective of control system security is to keep the plant safe and to keep production running. In contrast, IT security focuses on protecting data, such as credit card numbers, from being stolen. The primary threat to both of these goals is the infiltration of malicious software into the system.

Malicious software normally infects a system by 1) using file transfer mechanisms, such as file shares and the file transfer protocol (FTP), 2) exploiting vulnerabilities in network-facing software that allow code to be injected into the system, and 3) the automatic copying of files from portable media, such as USB sticks, CDs, DVDs, and cell phones to the system.

There are six steps that you need to address this threat. These steps are taken from emerging NIST, ISA, and industrial cybersecurity standards that are being integrated into a single international IEC standard [IEC 62443]. They define not only the security mechanisms needed in a control system, but also the supplier capabilities needed to harden the system at the site. Senior citizens struggle with mounting debt

It used to be that many Americans entered retirement having paid off their mortgages and most of their other debts. This should have been senior citizens' Golden Years. 

Nowadays, more and more people over the age of 65 are struggling with mounting debt levels, fueled primarily by mortgages and credit cards. The average debt held by senior citizens has ballooned to $50,000 in 2010, up 83% since 2001, according to Federal Reserve data crunched by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. 

"They had more debt in their working years and they've carried it over into retirement," said Craig Copeland, senior research associate at the institute. 

Much of this is due to an increase in housing-related debt. Families headed by someone at least 60 years old had the largest increase in average mortgage debt, in terms of percentage, between 2000 and 2012, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve. 

It's not because more older Americans bought homes, said Bill Emmons, an economist with the St. Louis Fed. Instead, they borrowed big against their houses. Some took out home equity loans, while others refinanced and took out cash, but also extended the term of their mortgages. 

Money was easily available before the credit crisis in 2008 and it was cheap. Some senior citizens used the funds to make home repairs, pay for vacations or help their children, while others put the proceeds in the stock market, figuring they could make a lot more money. 

Only 24% of homeowners over the age of 62 had mortgage debt in 1992, but that figure soared to 45% in 2010. 

"Virtually everyone borrowed more because of availability and incentives," Copeland said. "Surprisingly, older people got the bug too." 

Credit card debt has also become more pervasive among seniors. One-third of them are relying on plastic to cover basic living expenses, according to Demos, a public policy organization that advocates for lower- and middle-income Americans. 

Some consumer advocates say that the increasing debt load among the elderly could pose big problems, especially since seniors are more likely to have growing medical costs and less likely to be still working. 

"If people are relying on credit cards to pay living expenses, it's difficult to see how that turns around if they aren't earning additional income," said Amy Traub, senior policy analyst at Demos.

Soothing sights and delights from Doxford Hall Hotel

The sand is edged by curious beach hut type structures. I saw no sign of life but like to think of eccentric, slightly dishevelled, figures whiling and whittling away their days in complete peace.

There’s a beautiful walk past the craggy ruins of Dunstanburgh castle to Craster or over the headland to Beadnall beach. The light over the sand has a weird translucence which gives all a dream-like quality.

Opposite the beach, The Ship Inn sits in a tiny square. If you like a traditional pub with wooden floors and an open fire then you’ve found perfection. Their food is gorgeous, loads of locally caught fish – and they brew their own beer.

My second favourite thing – after remote bleak beaches – is slightly faded but spirited English seaside towns. So I was delighted with my visit to Seahouses. Theran with a fascinating board detailing all the recent rescues.

For a complete contrast there’s nearby Bamburgh, which has been a tourist location since Victorian times because of their most famous local, Grace Darling.

Grace was just 22 when she rowed more than a mile in raging seas to rescue stricken sailors after the SS Forfarshire sank on September 7, 1838. Her story captured the imagination of Britain at the time. Grace was one of the original celebs – newspaper sketch artists hung around the village trying to catch a glimpse of her – kind of like today’s paparazzi but armed only with a pencil.

The small but perfectly formed Grace Darling museum tells the story of her rescue through her personal belongings and letters. The biggest thrill is seeing the actual boat in which she carried out the rescue. Opposite is the church where she is buried.

As well as a castle Bamburgh also has all the requisite tourist pullers – delis, ice cream parlours, gift shops.

But it was the beach that again captivated me... rolling wide dunes, mile after mile of open sand.

Not far from Bamburgh there’s Alnwick, famous for its castle, which was Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films.

Depending on your generation you may prefer Alnwick gardens. There’s a woodland walk, rose gardens, water displays, a cherry orchard. (And there’s a restaurant called Treehouse which is literally in the tree tops. What human being could fail to be excited by a treehouse?)

It was built in the 1800s and was a residential home before being beautifully refurbished. There are 31 rooms which have been furnished with real consideration and taste. They’re really fresh and luxurious with gorgeous bathrooms.

This is simply one of those hotels that has achieved its clear aim of leaving guests pure and relaxed in mind and spirit.

There’s a lovely pool and spa. This is not a tiny hotel pool but a place where you can have a substantial swim.

The attention to detail continues in Doxford’s cosy, wood-panelled George Runciman restaurant which also has a roaring open fire. The menu is traditional with a delicious non-traditional spin. Many of the ingredients are proudly declared as locally sourced, with meat from Longframlington, potatoes from a Northumberland farm, seafood from North Shields.

Regular followers of RealClimate will be aware of our publication in 2009 in Nature, showing that West Antarctica — the part of the Antarctic ice sheet that is currently contributing the most to sea level rise, and which has the potential to become unstable and contribute a lot more to sea level rise in the future — has been warming up for the last 50 years or so.

Our paper was met with a lot of skepticism, and not just from the usual suspects. A lot of our fellow scientists, it seems, had trouble getting over their long-held view (based only on absence of evidence) that the only place in Antarctica that was warming up was the Antarctica Peninsula. To be fair, our analysis was based on interpolation, using statistics to fill in data where it was absent, so we really hadn’t proven anything; we’d only done an analysis that pointed in a particular direction.

It has been a strange couple of years in limbo: we have known with certainty for at least two years that our results were basically correct, because there was a great deal of very solid corroborating evidence, including the borehole temperature data that confirmed our basic findings, and data from automatic weather stations near the center of West Antarctica that we hadn’t used, but which Andy Monaghan at Ohio State (now NCAR) had shown also corroborated our results. So it was a nice early Christmas present to see the publication of a new assessment by the well-known guru of Antarctic meteorology, David Bromwich, along with his students and colleagues at Ohio State, the University of Wisconsin (who run the U.S. automatic weather station program in Antarctica) and NCAR, which back up our results. Actually, they do more than back-up our results: they show that our estimates were too conservative and that West Antarctica is actually warming by about a factor of two more than we estimated. Both showed unambiguously that West Antarctic is warming up, as fast as the Antarctic Peninsula. Bromwich et al. gets this same result again.

Who cares?

While the world mourns the loss of children in a senseless tragedy, there are others to be mourned for, too. This is the story of a woman who few would have noticed having passed away, even before the tragedy in Connecticut.

Paula Gomez died last week. She had a stroke on Thursday and ended up dying on Saturday. She was 40 years old and had no family and few friends to speak of. I found out what happened when her boyfriend Mike saw my number on her phone and called to tell me she had died. He said she had spoken of me positively as a friend.

I had the opportunity to meet Mike and interview him to get a better understanding of Paula’s life. He said she had been living with him and he was trying to arrange her final effects. He said he needed to raise $200 for the balance of her cremation and that he had arranged with a local priest to hold a small service. I was skeptical of the story at first, but then he told me if I wished to help out I could just call the funeral home and make a donation in her name.

I met Paula a couple of years ago at the restaurant in a local Shoreline casino. She looked worn out and disheveled but was gulping down a meal. I spoke with her to learn her story and found out that she was a local Aurora Avenue prostitute.

She had been addicted to drugs, had bad teeth, was not particularly attractive and just looked like she had lived a very hard life. She was quite open about her lifestyle and seem to be, overall, a nice person.

The food at the restaurant was cheap and the location convenient for where she plied her trade. I came to talk to her whenever I saw her and always showed concern and respect. She seemed to appreciate my concern even though I wasn’t a customer.

One time she asked for money as she claimed to be short for what she needed for a room for the night. When I saw her later that night she said she had spent some of the money on “a toot,” as she needed to do something to deal with her ordeal.

Another time, someone broke out the window of my car in the parking lot and stole my iPad. I knew that Paula knew most of the street people in the area, so I called and asked if she could be on the lookout for it. The next day she called and told me that she had found who had taken it and told them that it belonged to a friend of hers and she wanted it back. These are not nice people she was dealing with, but she convinced them to give it to her and she brought it back to me.

I tried to work with her to help her figure out how to beat her drug problem. I never again gave her cash but would instead bring her a meal or groceries or actually make a payment toward a room for her.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the skill set to provide her the help she needed to resolve her addiction. I attempted to put her in communication with services that could help, but until she was ready to make her own effort my attempts proved futile.

As we talked, I learned a bit about her background. Abused as a child and deserted by her parents and family, she ended up on the street at age 17. Drugs became a part of her life not long after, and she made a long downhill journey from that point forward.

Combined with the lack of a family to provide support Paula was left with no place to go.

Mike came across her and tried to help. However, with her background she couldn’t comprehend why anyone would care about her. They continued their relationship for several years but she could never truly believe in him until just recently.

Mike’s life was no bowl of cherries either. His wife had died when he met Paula, and he was suicidal. He saw Paula across the room in a restaurant and went up to talk to her and befriend her, similar to me. However, in his state, he fell for her and tried to create a relationship. At this point she had been treated like dirt by everyone who knew her and she didn’t believe anyone could care for her.

When Mike told me that they had been living together for the past several months, I was pleased. Then he told me they had been living in his car. He didn’t like her lifestyle and says that she wanted out of it too. But since that was the only thing she had done, she had little marketable skills. She needed money to live, and working the streets was the only practical way to raise it. They lived not paycheck to paycheck, but day to day — literally.

As I got to know Paula, I could see that she wanted things to change but had neither the resources nor the support to make those changes. She talked of programs from the state to help her get her teeth fixed and deal with some of her other health issues. One day she got hit by a car and suffered severe bruising on her leg. However, she didn’t go to the hospital as she couldn’t deal with the psychological treatment of being indigent and therefore missed out on the physical treatment as well. The driver who hit her just drove away.

Paula worked on the same corner for the last 20 years. She tried to get customers who she knew and would call her,Our technology gives rtls systems developers the ability. but if no one called she had to go out onto Aurora.

I saw her there several times and for the most part just drove by. Sometimes, when it was cold and dark and rainy, I would pull over and tell her she needed to get off the street. Her normal response was that she needed money to get a room. If I could, I would drive her to a motel and give her some money to pay for the room. I couldn’t stand seeing her out on that corner shivering.

She didn’t often come to the casino, so if I hadn’t seen her for a while I would call just to check out how she was doing. She always told me that she “was a survivor and not to worry.” Still, if I had the chance I would bring her some food or something else to help out.

Her death brings me great sadness. You never want someone you know to die, but more important it seemed like no one — outside of Mike — would notice that she was gone outside or even care.

On one hand, I was considering that it wouldn’t be a good idea for me to attend the funeral service for a prostitute. Luckily, my heart kicked in and told me Paula was a real person and she deserved to be honored. I will go and be there to honor her memory.

The more disturbing thing I think about is, how many other women are there out in the world facing a similar situation — drug addicted, selling bodies for day-to-day living expenses and with no support group? It made me feel good that she felt that way about me, but it made me feel awful that I couldn’t and didn’t know what more I could do to help.

The point of this story is that we need to worry about people in Paula’s situation. There must be some way to prevent people from falling through the cracks. I am not quite sure what to do, but I am going to figure this out. Several friends have told me that it was her own fault, that she could have chosen a different life if she weren’t so weak. I don’t believe that people who have been raised in an upper-middle-class lifestyle can comprehend what it’s like to grow up in a situation with abuse and no loving relations.

During the exhibition, from December to January, special art workshops will be taking place for children aged 8 to 14 years at Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.

In December, participants will receive the opportunity to develop recognition and understanding of the self and the world. They will be able to actively participate in a creative process and interpret the concepts to form a personalized work of art. In January, four workshops closely related to the six themes presented by ROTW will help students learn and develop knowledge about the Dubai Creek.

Nunsthorpe residents in favour of permit system

NUNSTHORPE residents have welcomed moves to tackle parking chaos near their homes.

New parking restrictions will be imposed to improve safety along Redbourne Road close to the junction with Second Avenue.

Traffic engineers will install a single yellow line on one side of the road, easing the bottleneck which prevented residents from safely manoeuvring in and out of their driveways. Double yellow lines will also be put down at the junction itself.

The measures are included in a traffic regulation order approved this week by Councillor Peter Wheatley, the portfolio holder for regeneration and environment.

It was drawn up after a petition was presented to the council back in March.

Traffic engineers say Second Avenue is a more suitable place for parking as it has blocked paving between the road and the pavement – but it is currently illegal to park there between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday.An indoor positioning system (IPS) is a term used for a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building.

However, residents are concerned that the cars currently parking on Redbourne Road will simply park outside their homes instead. It is believed that many of the cars belong to staff from the nearby hospital who do not want to pay for permits to park in the hospital grounds.

Second Avenue resident Jonathon Robinson, 39, said: "I can't get parked sometimes because of all the staff from the hospital. I would just like to be able to park outside my house and I think residents only parking would be a good idea."

Ward councillor Ray Oxby (Lab, South) said: "As ward councillors we are pleased to see that all the agencies and the residents are generally supportive of these changes.

"However, we will be actively seeking assurances from colleagues within the council that the new arrangements will be properly enforced."

Councillor Oxby said a residents parking permit system was an option that could be explored in the future, but added that the current proposals should be given a chance first.

Jug Johal, head of transport, car parking and security at the hospital, said: "We want to encourage our staff and visitors to park sensibly and we support this traffic regulation order. However, we cannot control where people park when they come to our hospitals.

"Our hospital car parking charges are some of the lowest in the region and we offer alternative forms of transport for people to try to reduce the number of vehicles coming to our sites.

"There is a frequent bus service which runs to the hospital, we provide a shuttle service for our staff between our Scunthorpe and Grimsby sites, and we have a cycle to work scheme and a car share facility. The move to 4 inches feels right for the iPhone, though it looks like a dwarf side-by-side with the 4.8-inch display on the Samsung Galaxy S III, arguably the best of the Android breed. I was able to display more than four extra paragraphs reading the same newspaper article on the Samsung as opposed to the iPhone 5. Samsung is countering with its own ad campaign: "The Next Big Thing Is Already Here." But Samsung's Big Thing is taller, wider and more than 0.7-ounces heavier than iPhone 5, though only a whisker thicker.

IPhone 5 devotees will appreciate the extra row of home screen icons made possible by the 4-inch display, although you are still limited to 11 of those screens. The larger screen on iPhone lets you display five days of calendar entries when the phone is held sideways compared with three on the older models. And you can watch widescreen high-def movies without "letterboxing".
