India on radar of Elevance Renewable for biorefinery

The US-based Elevance Renewable Sciences Inc, a high-growth specialty chemicals company, has plans to set up additional biorefineries throughout the world, including India, said a company official, without giving any specific details about the timing, place and scale of the future biorefineries. 

The timing and location of our biorefineries will be coordinated with our customers' supply chain needs. Currently, our emphasis is on meeting the significant needs identified by our customers for our announced biorefineries in Indonesia and in the US (Natchez, Mississippi). Elevance Renewable Sciences in a joint venture with Wilmar International has set up a biorefinery at Gresik, Indonesia, from which they have begun shipping commercial products, including novel specialty chemicals, to customers from last month. 

The 1,80,000 metric tonne manufacturing facility is the first biorefinery based on Elevances proprietary metathesis technology. The renewable performance specialty chemicals, olefins and oleochemicals will be used in personal care products, detergents and cleaners, lubricants and additives, engineered polymers, and other specialty chemicals markets.

Mesa opts for HazSim to enhance hazmat training realism

High climber Holmes seeks success

On the 1st December registration opened for the UAII Ice Climbing World Cup, which will take place from January to March in South Korea, Switzerland, Italy, Romania and Russia. Here in Edinburgh, third year Geology and Physical Geography student Harry Holmes is preparing to compete in the Switzerland leg of the tour in Saas-Fee as part of the British team, which he says modestly “is a bit silly because I’m really not that good.”

Ice climbing is the even more difficult and dangerous cousin of rock climbing and becomes interesting because the fluctuating nature of ice means that the routes are often changing. Holmes has competed in climbing competitions before, coming second in the Scottish Tooling Series last year and second in the Northern Tooling Series this year (dry-tooling has all the technique and equipment of ice climbing without any of the ice), but never on such a international stage.

At the moment his preparation consists of climbing as much as possible, avoiding a proper training plan, “as I would get bored if it got too much of a routine,” and finding someone to fund his entry into the competition.

Fortunately he managed to recently get sponsorship from Schmoolz, a company which makes dry tooling training aids, making it easier for him to compete. However he says that aside from big events he would not want to be sponsored for his everyday climbing because of the demands that sponsors make on achieving difficult climbs: “I’d rather not feel pressurised to climb hard things, but do it because I want to.”

For Holmes, climbing is not so much about the adrenaline thrill of facing death but rather about the technical side of making judgements on particular routes. He admits to enjoying the “geeky” side of winter climbing which is all about “how to put a piece of metal in rock”. This is apparent when he talks about the climbing gear that he has made or adapted. Instead of buying £300 custom-made fruit boots for ice climbing he has altered an old pair of climbing shoes by adding crampons. Apparently these shoes give him a flexibility that traditional ice boots would not and have the advantage of only costing him £80.

However, this is also is a reminder of the very well-equipped and funded professionals that Holmes will be going up against. Yet despite the dangers, Holmes does not foresee a future in which he won’t be climbing. His love of the sport is summed up in an account of his last climbing trip: “On Wednesday I was sat in a corrie in a complete white out and I was like ‘Why do I even enjoy this?’. And then we started climbing and it completely blew away because it’s just the best thing ever. There’s nothing like winter climbing. It’s just amazing.”

Generations Fall of Cybertron

I've taken an appreciation over the years for spaceship Transformers. I think Armada Tidal Wave and his Super Dimensional Fortress-style super battleship mode really locked that in for me and ever since I've been on the look out for toys that were or could be seen as interesting space vehicles if you just squint and tilt your head a little. And as ships go, Blast Off is certainly one of the more interesting designs to come along lately. Even more convenient given he's part of a full team set I needed to get anyway.

It's important to note before anything else that Blast Off requires immediate modifications for the toy's own safety. Thankfully they're pretty simple. There are tabs that hold Blast Off's shoulders up,This page list rubber hose products with details & specifications. but they're longer than needed to do the job, and become very difficult and stressy to insert or remove. You'll need to shorten them a little bit at a time just until the shoulder can be tabbed in or out comfortably. That out of the way, Blast Off makes a nice figure. The general look is pretty cool, the big shoulderpads especially giving a distinctive appearance. Blast Off has very effective double elbow joints as well, and two joints around the shoulder, which should theoretically mean a hell of a range of movement for the arms. But it doesn't. It's the fault of how the transformation was engineered more than anything else, and it prevents such simple things as stretching the arm straight in front, or raising it at all out to the side. The joints in the upper arm are truly just "around" where a shoulder joint should be, and nothing actually exists at the correct place to serve that role. The arrangement of joints subsequently really limits what ways the arm can be posed, which is a shame beyond just the absence of simple movements. The robot is really nice overall, and Blast Off could have easily stood out from his team as a legitimately good robot figure independent of being part of a combiner. But the arms make sure to remind you that this is a toy with another real purpose and it's just killing time standing here solo. You can undo some of the limitation by turning the shoulderpads back and giving Blast Off monkey arms, but the gain is so limited that it's really not worth the way it spoils the look.

Where Blast Off truly shines is in the vehicle mode. Well, shines is not really the right word what with it being all dark and night-time colors, but it's certainly the strength of this toy. And I'll tell you, from the moment the press photos were released just before Toy Fair, this has reminded me strongly of some existing ship design,The TagMaster Long Range hands free access System is truly built for any parking facility. but in all these months I have never been able to place it. It's driving me just a little bit nuts. Whatever it may resemble, it's plainly a sci-fi take on a space shuttle, but besides the most elementary of shapes it goes far off the mark in design. The bulbous aft section gives the impression of a massive drive system, while the comparatively narrow forward half gives it a feel more like a space fighter than a bus in space. (public transportation was always Astrotrain's job anyway) What I really enjoy in the appearance of the vehicle mode is that it has the impression of many overlapping panels and irregularities to look alien, but it's also styled in such a way that it comes across a little like an Original Trilogy Star Wars ship. I'm sure there's a generally accepted term for that, but in this case I'll just call it "antique futuristic", not to be confused with retro futuristic, of course.

Polymer-reinforced aerogel found resilient for space missions

"Tailoring Mechanical Properties of Aerogels for Aerospace Application," featured as a spotlight article in the March 23, 2011, edition of the American Chemical Society's Applied Material & Interfaces describes how polymer-strengthened silica aerogels maintain their effectiveness as thermal insulators under supercritical conditions of outer space, including temperature and pressure extremes.

Polymer improves strength and flexibility

Low thermal conductivity and low density make silica aerogels ideal insulators, according to Jana, yet their fragility often counters their prospective effectiveness, particularly in aerospace applications. Comprised of approximately 95 percent air and 5 percent silica, the delicate aerogels typically break down under relatively low stresses. However, a polymer conformal coating on the silica nanoskeleton not only improves the strength of aerogels, but their elasticity and flexibility as well.

"Consequently, you now have a material capable of withstanding compression and bending stresses as well as temperature extremes, making it a candidate for use on space rovers, inflatable decelerators and EVA suits," says Jana, whose team research examined density, pore structure, modulus and elastic recovery of epoxy-reinforced aerogels.

Subsequent research could lead to streamlined methods for applying the polymer reinforcement to aerosol articles and expanding their use and configuration. As flexible thin sheets, for example, aerogel insulation material can be wrapped easily around pipes or tanks, using shape memory properties of the polymer reinforcement, or can be produced in net shapes obviating secondary processing or secondary handling, according to Jana.
