Independent plans have for years been developed for different portions of the waterfront, including the port, parks and Albert Whitted Airport. Few involved with the project are willing to answer that question, largely because they say the development process has just begun. Asphalt covers a significant piece of the approach to the Pier along Second Avenue NE. Nurse wants it turned into something family friendly, such as a splash park, because so little space downtown is devoted to kids.He believes that Al Lang Stadium could be better utilized. Given the popularity of the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team and the sparse crowds who attend the international baseball games, Nurse suggested converting the facility to a soccer park, assuming the cost is reasonable. 

The visiting panel likely will consider those ideas and more.Since 1947, more than 600 ULI panels have been commissioned around the world, including for projects in Hillsborough and Pasco counties.The members of the group coming to St. Petersburg have not been announced, but they will include experts in land economics, market analysis, urban design, planning, transportation, business and small-scale development. 

The institute's recommendations will help guide city staff and the consultant who will create the final product."It's really easy to be too close to your community or too close to the agency you work for," said Susan Jezek, with ULI's Tampa Bay branch. "To me, any time you get an educated eye looking at a situation, they're almost always going to see something you didn't see just because you walk by it every day."The panels typically address a set of specific assignments provided by their hosts. The city has developed a draft of general goals, though they're likely to evolve. Among the topics they've been asked to assess.

Student enrollment is continuing a five-year trend of limited or declining student growth. On Wednesday, student enrollment was 25,157, which does not include the 860 prekindergarten students scheduled to start on Sept. 3. The projection for this year was 26,773; however, based on this year’s enrollment trend, school officials are estimating enrollment at 26,500. Last year’s official enrollment was 26,644 students. The stalled student growth of the past several years is in contrast to the triple-digit student population increases of the preceding two decades. Enrollment growth since the start of the 2006 school year has slowed to the smallest numbers since the early 1980s when the school system last saw decreases in student enrollment. That decline was followed by 20 years of high growth, with as many as 700 to 800 new students enrolling in some years.Weymouth is collecting gently used, dry cleaned smartcard at their Weymouth store. 

Human Resources is winding down the hiring process for the 2013-14 school year. Connie Armstead, executive director of human resources, reported Monday that all but seven teaching positions had been filled. Vacancies are being covered with long-term substitutes. Human resources specialists reported shortage areas in special education, world languages, technical education, and high school science and mathematics. 

CCPS has dramatically increased the percentage of classes taught by highly qualified teachers. Teachers with Advanced or Standard Professional Certification in the subject area they were teaching taught more than 96 percent of classes in Charles County last year.

China creates food fast, but not fast food

Under the arches of the Zhongshan Park elevated railway station, theres a joint where Ive been catching quick lunches for years. I first went in, nearly a dozen years ago, because the sign over the door caught my attention: Zhen Gong Fu Real Kung Fu, next to a cartoon picture of Hong Kong martial arts legend Bruce Lee in full flight, about to deal a lethal blow. 

It was modern Chinese kitsch, something novel for Shanghai at a time when most lunch places here were undecorated mom-and-pop eateries, and I remember thinking: The owner must be a genius.Please click the images below to view more pictures of realtimelocationsystem tiles! Surely, Real Kung Fu with its cheap chicken-and-rice staples and globalized gloss would soon be everywhere, the answer to the question I often heard from businesspeople, tourists and students in China: Where is the Middle Kingdoms answer to McDonalds? 

Theres certainly a market for it. China already wolfs down more than $160 billion in Westernized fast food from McDonalds, KFC and others each year, according to Mintel, the market research firm where I work. 

Back in 1987, KFC opened its first branch in China; it now has more than 4,000 locations. McDonalds came along a few years later, in 1990; its currently pushing 2,000 franchises. Relative newcomers like Subway and Burger King are planning hundreds of new outlets across the country. But my good friends at Real Kung Fu have managed, after nearly 15 years,You can make your own more powerful customkeychain. to open just 480 stores. McDonalds its not. 

But why? Its an acknowledged fact of the globalization era that pretty much everyone likes Chinese food: From Accra to Zagreb, its not hard to find a decent Cantonese or Sichuanese restaurant. So why do the Chinese, so adept at replicating and re-engineering everything from Caterpillar bulldozers to iPads, find it so stubbornly difficult to replicate a McDonalds for local food? 

There are any number of theories. My favourite is simply this: China may have only one time zone, but it has no national cuisine. Thats not to say you cant find great food just about everywhere, just that theres no one thing that Chinese crave everywhere think of this as the cheeseburger-with-fries problem. It seems so paradoxical: Food in China is nothing if not quick, cheap and filling,Virtual indoorpositioningsystem logo Verano Place logo. the foundation on which fast food is built. 

But it is also very much local. I have yet to go to a Chinese city that doesnt have a superb delicacy to call its own: Gorgeous Shanghai soup dumplings xiaolongbao impregnated with pork gravy cost just pennies; crispy fried stinky tofu chou doufu in Changsha is equally cheap; and then theres Beijings salty jianbing pancakes stuffed with fresh chives and also available for almost nothing, just like Sichuans spicy hot pot, Guangdongs delicate dim sum, and Yunnans sumptuous "crossing the bridge" noodles guoqiao mixian. Its all delicious and inexpensive. The second reason is bad governance. For all the Communist Partys prowess in standardizing education, military service and urban planning, it is remarkably inept at or indifferent to food.Large collection of quality cleanersydney at discounted prices. Poorly enforced food-safety standards and erratic business-licencing codes mean setting up a roadside stall is an easy, cheap entrepreneurial activity. Street vendors, fresh markets and entire streets of small family businesses dedicated to a particular dish, say, beef jerky or cold tofu, all still militate against standardization. Yes, things are changing: Hypermarkets and convenience stores are popping up everywhere, and China now has thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of food-processing companies turning out ready meals, prepackaged foods, and canned beverages but specialization and regionalism still rule. 

Think of Chinas food culture in the same way you might think of the European Union as a large landmass where old borders between languages and cuisines endure, even as crossing those borders has become easier than ever. Over the years, Ive talked to northern Chinese migrants in the sweaty factories in Shenzhen who still prefer noodles to rice, Sichuanese construction laborers in Shanghai who long for chicken blood-filled hot pots, and Muslim Uighurs eating cumin-scented lamb skewers in a Beijing back street. Nothing beats the taste of comfort food for someone working 18 hours a day thousands of miles from home. 

The third reason is hygiene. When Mintel surveyed customers at foreign fast-food joints in China, most thought the food at local chains was tastier than at places like McDonalds. But only four per cent of Chinese surveyed thought local fast-food joints were more hygienic than Western ones. With China now convulsed by fears over food safety, from melamine-tainted milk to steroid-enhanced pork to chickens carrying a deadly flu, this is no small concern. Choosing McDonalds in Shanghai isnt so much a lifestyle choice as self-protection. That vendor in the alley across from the Golden Arches may have the tastiest grub in town, but then again, you might just be eating grubs. 

Cleanliness alone doesnt explain it, though. Nor does novelty. Were now long past the point when a Big Mac represents a taste of something exotic and Western. Most teen-agers in Kunming today probably dont even recall a time when there wasnt a KFC on the corner. And that might just be the point: What these Western chains all have in common is their success at transcending their foreignness in China. Theyve managed to become what the marketing gurus now call "glocal" brands. Thats why youll find a burger slathered in teriyaki sauce followed by a red bean pie at McDonalds in China, and why the "Dragon Twister" a wrap of fried chicken, cucumbers, scallions, and duck sauce has long been a bestseller at KFC in the Middle Kingdom. Its not bad, but at $4.40 for a Twister, drink, and tub of sweet corn, you can do a lot better. 

This spring, trying to set a good example for my staff, I became determined to get into the office early and opted for the KFC breakfast offering en route. At 7:30 a.m. on Shanghais Fuzhou Road in the citys heart, I found myself sitting with dozens of black-suited bai ling white collar office workers. The KFC breakfast menu is decidedly local: youtiao deep-fried traditional Chinese dough sticks, shaobing sesame-flavoured bread rolls, and coriander-flavoured congee rice porridge. No scrambled eggs and toast in sight. And its a big hit. A Chinese colleague of mine, Lily, stops three mornings a week at a KFC near our office for breakfast after dropping off her daughter at kindergarten. She has never been tempted by a McDonalds Egg McMuffin, but she loves her morning youtiao. Until a year ago, she used to pick them up from a street vendor nearby for half the price, but he got busted for using "gutter oil" recycled grease collected from restaurant fryers, drains, grease traps, or slaughterhouse waste, which drove her into the loving arms of the KFCs hygienic embrace. 

My Shanghai Real Kung Fu is still around even flourishing. The once-dirty floors are now mopped every hour; the dog-eared paper menus have given way to illuminated menu boards that hover over high-tech registers manned by smiling, uniformed employees who move almost robotically from counter to kitchen and back. Real Kung Fu promises your entire meal within 60 seconds of ordering or your money back, and I have yet to claim a refund for my favourite dish, the really rather good chicken-and-mushroom rice. Theyve learned a few tricks. 

The same can be said of other vastly improved and emerging local fast-food places, such as Mandefu and Baijila, small-scale Chinese chains doing slightly Westernized variants of local favourites, complete with knockoff Western logos Mandefus red and yellow sign front owes more than a bit to McDonalds palette, while Baijila taunts KFC with a slightly feminine Colonel Sanders. 

But Chinas up-and-comers, its aspiring middle class, prefer the status of the real thing. McDonalds and KFC are still largely the preserve of the bai ling and young families on the make, who go for a little taste of things foreign, and a sign perhaps that they really are moving up. As Warren Liu, a former KFC senior executive, has written, when the chains first restaurant opened just outside Tiananmen Square back in 1987, "Customers were attracted to KFCs Chinese brand name; its American roots; its likeable, grayish, beard-bearing brand spokesperson Colonel Sanders; the unique restaurant decor; the new way of ordering food; the bright red and blue colours of the brand logo; the American music broadcast inside the restaurant; and, as an added bonus, a very clean toilet!" Thats mostly all still true. 

Around the corner at my local noodle shop, the average customer is decidedly a step down on the socioeconomic ladder, largely from the citys army of waidiren migrant workers who need to watch every yuan. Tom Miller, author of the recent book Chinas Urban Billion: The Story Behind the Biggest Migration in Human History, has observed this phenomenon closely. "If the economy works out right for this army of labour," Miller says, "then maybe someday soon theyll get in line at KFC, but for most that moment is not quite yet."

The truth is: The Chinese people are both aspirational and eminently sensible when it comes to partaking of the benefits of global capitalism. Great cars come from Germany, luxury fashion from France and Italy, and fast food from America. And the hundreds of millions who make up Chinas new middle class want the best of everything: Audi cruisers, Gucci purses and, it would seem, KFCs Dragon Twister.

Google launches Internet-beaming balloons

Wrinkled and skinny at first, the translucent, jellyfish-shaped balloons that Google released this week from a frozen field in the heart of New Zealand's South Island hardened into shiny pumpkins as they rose into the blue winter skies above Lake Tekapo, passing the first big test of a lofty goal to get the entire planet online. 

It was the culmination of 18 months' work on what Google calls Project Loon, in recognition of how wacky the idea may sound.Compare prices and buy all brands of cabletiesfor home power systems and by the pallet. Developed in the secretive X lab that came up with a driverless car and web-surfing eyeglasses, the flimsy helium-filled inflatables beam the Internet down to earth as they sail past on the wind. 

Still in their experimental stage, the balloons were the first of thousands that Google's leaders eventually hope to launch 20 kilometers (12 miles) into the stratosphere in order to bridge the gaping digital divide between the world's 4.8 billion unwired people and their 2.2 billion plugged-in counterparts. 

If successful, the technology might allow countries to leapfrog the expense of laying fiber cable, dramatically increasing Internet usage in places such as Africa and Southeast Asia. 

"It's a huge moonshot. A really big goal to go after," said project leader Mike Cassidy. "The power of the Internet is probably one of the most transformative technologies of our time." 

The first person to get Google Balloon Internet access this week was Charles Nimmo, a farmer and entrepreneur in the small town of Leeston. He found the experience a little bemusing after he was one of 50 locals who signed up to be a tester for a project that was so secret, no one would explain to them what was happening. Technicians came to the volunteers' homes and attached to the outside walls bright red receivers the size of basketballs and resembling giant Google map pins. 

Nimmo got the Internet for about 15 minutes before the balloon transmitting it sailed on past. His first stop on the Web was to check out the weather because he wanted to find out if it was an optimal time for "crutching" his sheep, a term he explained to the technicians refers to removing the wool around sheep's rear ends. 

Nimmo is among the many rural folk, even in developed countries, that can't get broadband access. After ditching his dial-up four years ago in favor of satellite Internet service, he's found himself stuck with bills that sometimes exceed $1,000 in a single month. 

"It's been weird," Nimmo said of the Google Balloon Internet experience. "But it's been exciting to be part of something new." 

While the concept is new, people have used balloons for communication, transportation and entertainment for centuries. In recent years, the military and aeronautical researchers have used tethered balloons to beam Internet signals back to bases on earth. 

Google's balloons fly free and out of eyesight, scavenging power from card table-sized solar panels that dangle below and gather enough charge in four hours to power them for a day as the balloons sail around the globe on the prevailing winds. Far below, ground stations with Internet capabilities about 100 kilometers (60 miles) apart bounce signals up to the balloons. 

The signals would hop forward, from one balloon to the next, along a backbone of up to five balloons. 

Each balloon would provide Internet service for an area twice the size of New York City, about 1,250 square kilometers (780 square miles), and terrain is not a challenge. They could stream Internet into Afghanistan's steep and winding Khyber Pass or Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, a country where the World Bank estimates four out of every 100 people are online. 

There are plenty of catches, including a requirement that anyone using Google Balloon Internet would need a receiver plugged into their computer in order to receive the signal. Google is not talking costs at this point,You can design your cleanersydney or select one of our pose. although they're striving to make both the balloons and receivers as inexpensive as possible, dramatically less than laying cables. 

The signals travel in the unlicensed spectrum, which means Google doesn't have to go through the onerous regulatory processes required for Internet providers using wireless communications networks or satellites. In New Zealand, the company worked with the Civil Aviation Authority on the trial.Other companies want a piece of that drycabinet action Google chose the country in part because of its remoteness. Cassidy said in the next phase of the trial they hope to get up to 300 balloons forming a ring on the 40th parallel south from New Zealand through Australia, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. 

Christchurch was a symbolic launch site because some residents were cut off from online information for weeks following a 2011 earthquake that killed 185 people. Google believes balloon access could help places suffering natural disasters get quickly back online. Tania Gilchrist, a resident who signed up for the Google trial, feels lucky she lost her power for only about 10 hours on the day of the quake. 

"After the initial upheaval, the Internet really came into play," she said. "It was how people coordinated relief efforts and let people know how to get in touch with agencies. It was really, really effective and it wasn't necessarily driven by the authorities." 

At Google's mission control in Christchurch this week, a team of jet lagged engineers working at eight large laptops used wind data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to maneuver the balloons over snowy peaks, identifying the wind layer with the desired speed and direction and then adjusting balloons' altitudes so they floated in that layer. 

"It's a very fundamentally democratic thing that what links everyone together is the sky and the winds," said Richard DeVaul, an MIT-trained scientist who founded Project Loon and helped develop Google Glass, hidden camera-equipped eyeglasses with a tiny computer display that responds to voice commands. 

DeVaul initially thought their biggest challenge would be establishing the radio links from earth to sky,The largest manufacturer of textile smartcard for use with perchloroethylene. but in the end, one of the most complex parts was hand building strong, light, durable balloons that could handle temperature and pressure swings in the stratosphere. 

Google engineers studied balloon science from NASA, the Defense Department and the Jet Propulsion Lab to design their own airships made of plastic films similar to grocery bags. Hundreds have been built so far. 

He said they wouldn't interfere with aircraft because they fly well below satellites and twice as high as airplanes, and they downplayed concerns about surveillance, emphasizing that they would not carry cameras or any other extraneous equipment. 

The balloons would be guided to collection points and replaced periodically. In cases when they failed, a parachute would deploy. 

While there had been rumors, until now Google had refused to confirm the project. But there have been hints: In April, Google's executive chairman tweeted "For every person online, there are two who are not. By the end of the decade, everyone on Earth will be connected," prompting a flurry of speculative reports. 

And international aid groups have been pushing for more connectivity for more than a decade.This is a basic iccard used for presence sensing. 

In pilot projects, African farmers solved disease outbreaks after searching the Web, while in Bangladesh "online schools" bring teachers from Dhaka to children in remote classrooms through large screens and video conferencing. 

Many experts said the project has the potential to fast-forward developing nations into the digital age, possibly impacting far more people than the Google X lab's first two projects: The glasses and a fleet of self-driving cars that have already logged hundreds of thousands of accident-free miles. 

"Whole segments of the population would reap enormous benefits, from social inclusion to educational and economic opportunities," said DePauw University media studies professor Kevin Howley. 

Temple University communications professor Patrick Murphy warned of mixed consequences, pointing to China and Brazil where Internet service increased democratic principles, prompting social movements and uprisings, but also a surge in consumerism that has resulted in environmental and health problems. 

"The nutritional and medical information, farming techniques, democratic principles those are the wonderful parts of it," he said. "But you also have everyone wanting to drive a car, eat a steak, drink a Coke." 

As the world's largest advertising network, Google itself stands to expand its own empire by bringing Internet to the masses: More users means more potential Google searchers, which in turn give the company more chances to display their lucrative ads. 

Richard Bennett, a fellow with the nonprofit Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, was skeptical, noting that cell phones are being used far more in developing countries. 

"I'm really glad that Google is doing this kind of speculative research," he said. "But it remains to be seen how practical any of these things are." 

Ken Murdoch, a chief information officer for the nonprofit Save the Children, said the service would be "a tremendous key enabler" during natural disasters and humanitarian crises, when infrastructure can be nonexistent or paralyzed. 

"The potential of a system that can restore connectivity within hours of a crisis hitting is tremendously exciting," agreed Imogen Wall at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, although she warned that the service must be robust. "If the service fails in a crisis, then lives are lost." 

In Christchurch this week, the balloons were invisible in the sky except for an occasional glint, but people could see them if they happened to be in the remote countryside where they were launched or through binoculars, if they knew where to look. 

Before heading to New Zealand, Google spent a few months secretly launching between two and five flights a week in California's central valley, prompting what Google's scientists said were a handful of unusual reports on local media.

Family thrills on Gold Coast

Not a minute of it. On an action-packed family holiday with my teenage son Blair, I was bounced down a hill in a water-filled plastic bubble, screamed my lungs out on rides at the big theme parks and went face-to-face with a tiger and a baby crocodile. 

The Gold Coast is renowned for its classic family attractions and we explored and enjoyed the rides of Dreamworld and WhiteWater World, but away from the theme parks, Blair and I found a heap of activity for families to dive into. On South Stradbroke Island, where the Tallship Island Adventures cruise travels to, we were whipped around on the water in an exciting jetboat ride. We patted the dolphins at Sea World, fed tigers and held a snake and a baby crocodile at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. 

Our adventure took us away from the developed areas. When we arrived at McLaren's Landing - 17km from the centre of Surfers - Bruce Nicholls, owner of the family-run business, had a delicious barbie on the go. Tourists can parasail, jetski, sand toboggan, ride a Segway and go on eco tours at Stradbroke. 

"This form of nature-based tourism you can't guarantee, but it's a chance to see the natural environment," Bruce explained as we travelled in a 4WD down one of the island's three firetracks to Eastern Pacific Ocean beach. 

It looked magnificent in all its wild glory, the surf crashing on the windy beach, and Blair had a lot of fun sand-tobogganing down the dunes. 

Bruce's family keeps the island in as natural a state as possible. There is no electricity, sewerage system or water - the island has generators and the water is purified. There are no predators to bother the monitor lizards and rare wallabies. 

"It's a real Aussie bush experience," Bruce said as a wallaby with a little joey in her pouch approached us for a curious look. 

Next up, we went zorbing. On the Gold Coast, they've taken to it with relish and call it Oz Ball - after the stoush over Phar Lap and pavlova, bouncing down hills in plastic balls could be grounds for the latest transtasman scrap. 

"I wouldn't go in this one," said the assistant, who would later launch me from the top of the hill. "What? Why not?" I asked as I was diving through the hole in the middle and had belts being secured around my ankles, around my waist and over my shoulders. He assured me I'd be fine, but that I needed to be strapped in as this ride would go fast and I'd be going backwards, forwards, side to side. 

His favourite was the hydro zorb - you are not strapped in and slosh around with water inside the ball - so I wondered why I was having to try the harness one. But I was told I would not be a true "zorbette"if I didn't brave the bumpy, twisty, dizzy ride that the harness zorb offered. 

"Are you comfortable?" asked Peter Murray, owner of Cloud9 Seaplanes. I barely got the word "yes" out before the plane was on its side and we were looking at luxury homes near Surfers Paradise from an unusual angle. Then Peter, who flies many unsuspecting women to secluded islands where their boyfriends are waiting to provide a romantic dinner and pop the question, said he wanted to surprise a fella he knew who was driving a jetboat below us.Find a great selection of customkeychain deals. IN recent years, a new harvest of historical writings has sprouted forth out of the ashes of devastating eruptions from Victorian ideologies. Practically all fundamental presuppositions of the older generation of historians have now been called into question. Then, the spectacle of ideology masquerading as history has been caught, exposed, and censured ruthlessly, and so has been the fate of a chronic standard practice: that of privileging the account of the elite-victor over the tale of the lowly-defeated — this is now dethroned as a practice which only engenders histories that are truncated and lopsided at best.

And as for the history of Pakistan, Ayesha Jalal’s books have marked a decisive breakthrough indeed, opening up with tremendous energy many new vistas not only in history but also in historiography.

In the story of this onward march one would painfully miss the eloquent Yale historian María Rosa Menocal who died just a few days ago. Menocal wrote extensively on al-Andalus, medieval Muslim Spain, and threw the whole standard, received discourse on Europe’s literary and intellectual ancestry into jeopardy. Through seminal works such as The Ornament of the World and The Arabic Role in Medieval Literary History: A Forgotten Heritage, she provided a glimpse of the Arabo-Muslim blood running through all aspects of latter-day European life, particularly in its literary and cultural life. No history of European literature, whether it is lyrical poetry or the picaresque novels such as the redoubtable Don Quixote, can be written without recourse to Arabic sources — this is what we learn from Menocal. She provided a learned antidote to the divisive ideologies of an eternal clash between “the Orient” and the “the Occident” — if these are two distinct cultural spheres, she taught us, then they have gravitated towards each other, one transmitting its motion to the other. The grand historian Marshall Hodgdson had written many years ago that what we call European “ascendency” is a convergence of many streams, the Arabo-Islamic stream is one of most gushing among them. Menocal grafted more flesh onto this groundbreaking observation. To be sure,Installers and distributors of solar panel, she will be missed.

But all of this throws into sharp relief one fundamental lesson — the lesson that history, far from being an antiquarian romance for the past, for the “dead and gone,” is our contemporary concern. So here we come to the pragmatics of history. See how Romila Thapar will tell us that it is wrong to read Hindu-Muslim communalism back into the remote alleys of the past and forming the essence of these two peoples, fundamentally revising in the process the so-familiar Mahmud Ghaznavi-Somnath story. And note how Ranajit Gauha will lend an ear to the voice of the voiceless masses, now underscoring and restoring their human dignities. Listen to Irfan Habib speaking about the extra-ethnic, extra-communal administrative and sheer imperial concerns of the Mughals; and Ayesha Jalal laying out before us the complex mapping of the Pakistan movement and of the legal cause of the Quaid-i-Azam. Then, note too Menocal writing like a sage a prescription for the remedy of rigid Europe-Islam extremisms, and handing us the tool for scratching clean the ugly deposits of the clash of civilisations thesis…

The moral of the tale is clear: history enables us to explain ourselves. It gives us the know-how to read our bearings in space-time coordinates, it provides us an anchorage for our otherwise suspended temporal existence. Yes, it is more than a “romance with the dead and gone”; it is relevant for our lives here and now. To put it crudely, history is useful.

Let’s make a turn here. It is generally said, and drummed into the ears of impressionable youngsters, that if history is just a romance with that which has slipped away into the dark world of non-existence, poetry is worse: it is through and through romance, utterly useless! We live in an age of science and technology, it is pronounced, and poetry can teach us nothing in making progress in this field, let alone in achieving excellence. This attitude seems to be part of a colonial hangover, and manifests the worst species of terror wrought by the commercial-financial industry. It is also based on historical ignorance, and on a complementary ideology that represses the basic human liberty of self-expression and self-realisation, generating a sinister rebirth of alienation. To prevent human beings from entering into the free world of imagination, to outlaw the construction of universes parallel to this given one, and to place barbed wires at the entry points of creative expression, is to deprive them of their very humanity. To be human is to be free to create.

But we are here concerned with the pragmatics of poetry. Such episodes are numerous.
