Inside Chicago librarys new pop-up maker lab

If you've ever had a hankering to try out a 3D printer, a laser cutter, or a milling machine without dropping thousands of your own hard-earned dollars, the Harold Washington Library in Chicago is the place to be. Starting today, July 8, Harold Washington has become the first major urban library to open a pop-up "maker lab," allowing members of the general public the opportunity to experiment with the cutting-edge technologies. And while there are still a few wrinkles to iron out before the public can use all the machines, the Chicago Public Library (CPL) system is already looking forward to where this project will go next. 

"There's more buzz about this on social media than anything we've ever done," CPL's First Deputy Commissioner Andrea Senz told Ars. 

What exactly is the pop-up maker lab? CPL partnered up with Chicago's Museum of Science and Industrywhich is offering its own maker lab to museum visitorsin order to put together the program. Unlike the museum's lab, however, the maker space at Harold Washington is completely free and open to the public. Chicago residents will be prompted to use a library card to gain access, but Senz told Ars that out-of-town visitors won't be turned away if they don't have a card of their own. 

Visitors will eventually be able to make use of three MakerBot 2 3D printers,Choose from the largest selection of cleaningsydney in the world. two laser cutters from Inventables, and one milling machine, in addition to open source software on a fleet of computers so that people can design their own projects. In the weeks leading up to the public opening, members of the CPL and American Library Association staff have been using the machines to make wooden iPhone docks with the milling machine, craft their own custom keychains with the laser cutters, and even print an entire chess set with the 3D printers, though they're eager to see what the public will come up with following the launch. 

"We have our own pre-set ideas of what people are going to make and what will draw people in, but we also just want them to be exposed to new tools and technology," Senz said. "If the lab is super popular, there is a possibility for a larger space in this building, or we could take it to another branch where folks in that neighborhood would be able to use that kind of thing." 

Harold Washington's maker lab is in just one room on one floor of the massive downtown library, and it's not permanent. The current grant that allows the library to run the space goes through the end of the year, meaning the staff will then need to evaluate the success of the project. 

"We can decide if the maker space makes sense for the library, period. We'll ask ourselves: does it fit nicely into this whole informal learning environment that we're trying to create?" Senz said. 

Some of those lessons have already come from smaller communities that have installed similar maker spaces into their libraries. "They tend to be a little smaller scale, as most of those libraries just jumped right in," Senz said, "but we really took our time so we could figure out what it is about this whole maker thing that fits into a library setting." 

One such lesson is that the machines are loud when being usednot exactly ideal for a library. Additionally, since some of these machines are relatively new technology (3D printers, we're looking at you), they tend to break down easily. In fact, that's why the Harold Washington library decided not to make its three MakerBot printers available for public use just yet, despite the buzz around today's launch. "That will be coming very soon, but on launch day, we'll probably just have the MakerBots printing our own projects to give people a feel for how they work," the library's head of business, science, and technology, Mark Andersen, told Ars. 

"Our goal was to make our staff comfortable enough with them to fix them," Senz said as she described some of the hacks the staff came up with in order to keep the machines running smoothly. "I'm pretty sure they've become experts at re-threading the machines." (Indeed, as someone who has had access to a MakerBot 2 in recent months, I can attest to their occasional flakiness.) 

Despite these setbacks, Senz and Andersen believe it was a good decision to use consumer-grade machines for the laband not just because the grant limited their ability to spend too much money on individual technologies. "We couldn't buy super expensive equipment, but it turned out well because we have equipment that's a little more likely to be in someone's home one day," Andersen said. "These are things that a family could buy today if they wanted to spend the money on it, and we want to teach them how to use it." 

So far, it seems the public is dying to jump into the labteachers, instructors, and even business owners have reportedly been e-mailing nonstop to find out how they can get involved. "When school gets back in, we have a few high school teachers and principals who want to use that space as a hands-on lab for a class," Senz said. She then told a story about an instructor who asked about the output capacity of the maker lab's machines. "If you're asking me about capacity, you're already thinking too big!" 

Perhaps the pop-up maker lab isn't quite ready to start churning out custom chess sets with all your friends' faces on the pawns. But the interest in doing so is there, and the library wants to tap into it. Said Senz, "We really designed it as an introduction to maker tools, culture, and economies with the hope that people will continue on their own." 

An economist at IHS Global Insight, Leslie Levesque, observed that households had increased credit card balances in May by the most in 12 months. The improved outlook on the economy and finances appeared to have made consumers more comfortable with purchasing on plastic. In addition, auto and student loan balances continued to grow. 

Better job numbers, higher property values and rising equity prices, Levesque said, continue to support this. Retailers reported a decent 0.6 percent increase in sales in May and are expected to have had another strong month in June. Overall sales for the month, he added, will once again be propped up by autos, as light-vehicle sales were the highest since November 2007. 

The category that includes credit card use rose $6.6 billion, also the largest gain in a year. Credit card debt reached $847.1 billion, the most since September 2010. Credit card debt remains about 16 percent below its high of $1.02 trillion in July 2008 -- just before the financial crisis erupted. 

Borrowing for autos and student loans rose $13 billion in May. That was the sharpest increase since February. This category of borrowing has been rising especially fast, driven by loans to pay for college. 

The Federal Reserve's consumer credit report does not separate student loans from auto loans. But data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York show that student loan debt has been the biggest driver of borrowing since the Great Recession officially ended. More credit card borrowing could help boost consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. But some consumers have been hesitant to run up high-interest debt since the recession ended. Time for the great outdoors in Medina: What's Brewing

My team and I walked around Wolf Creek Park Sunday checking blue bird boxes and recording the contents of the boxes. We found only one of the 12 boxes on our route that contained baby bluebirds. At home, my husband Phil and I have been planting flowers, trimming bushes and trees, and mowing the lawn. We hired one local company to grind some tree stumps, and another to edge our flower beds. Our driveway will have a large pile of mulch sitting on it by the time this column appears and we will be shifting multiple wheelbarrow loads from the pile to the beds. Were also replacing the trees that were cut down last year. The yard always looks terrific at least for a while. 

On the last two Saturdays, I left Phil to work in our yard while I took some of the tools and worked elsewhere, first at our church, then at the John Smart House Museum. I adopted a large flower bed at the church and am responsible for its upkeep. The person in charge of assigning the beds to parishioners is Bobbie Foy, an art teacher at the high school. She made tiles approximately 5 inches square that identify the person who works in each bed; mine reads, This garden is lovingly maintained by God and Mary Jane Brewer. At first I was delighted to receive recognition for my hard work, then I realized that if I fail to maintain the bed, the whole world will know who is slacking off. Bobbie admitted to me that she had guilt trips in mind when she designed the tiles. 

The Medina County Historical Society has a work day each spring to do all those maintenance jobs that Ive been doing at home. This year we were lucky to have a hardy group of volunteers C two boy scouts along with several board members and some other members. Treemasters Tree Service had dumped a load of donated mulch earlier in the week, so we edged, trimmed, and weeded, then mulched. I transplanted some daylilies from one side of the house to a bald spot near the sign in the front yard while Carole Feron planted some new hostas in a naked area beside the house. I enjoy driving by and admiring the fruits of our labor. 

Phil and I attended the district track meet Friday night. Last year we practically drowned because it poured for at least an hour while the officials decided whether or not to cancel the meet. This years meet was held in sunshine and blue skies and temperatures around 30 degrees. We nearly froze. We go to meets because we like to support our son who is one of the girls coaches, but also because we love to see the athletes perform. They are healthy, disciplined, confident, and having fun. 

I attended another end-of-the-school year event with some lady friends, but this event was indoors. We went to Show Time, the annual musical spectacular presented by the choral department at the high school. As usual, we were impressed by the talent of the students and the professionalism of the production. The choreography was especially delightful this year. Again, we witnessed high school students who were healthy, disciplined,How cheaply can I build a ventilationsystem? confident, and having a great deal of fun. All these young people are building memories that will stay with them forever. 

Medina County Board of Realtors volunteers recently helped to plant bushes and flowers at the new Medina Creative Pet Play Doggie Day Care & Spa site at 4080 Creative Living Way. Another group of volunteers painted the interior of a Medina Creative Housing home.

Many patients in the city's psychiatric hospitals had been looking forward to the introduction of a new law this month.Elpas Readers detect and forward 'Location' and 'State' data from Elpas Active RFID Tags to host elevatorparts platforms. Although the new law, which came into effect on May 1, means that a patient should be discharged from a psychiatric hospital after recovery if he or she wants to leave, only 18 of the 70 patients that met this condition have actually been discharged from the Shanghai Mental Health Center in Pudong New Area this month. 

The hospital houses twice the number of patients it should. The doctors and nurses work overtime trying to care for the patients. The big stumbling block is the patients' families who are often reluctant to accept family members back home after treatment. 

The hospital has been trying to contact the families of the other 52 patients who can now leave, but the families are proving elusive - changing their phone numbers, moving addresses and remaining difficult to contact. 

The situation is the same for many of the mental health institutions in Shanghai with a legal expert suggesting that the hospitals are caught between a rock and a hard place - they could be taken to court if they release the patients and they could also face legal penalties for continuing to keep patients who might be released. 

The Shanghai Mental Health Center in Pudong is packed. The high-rise center was designed to accommodate 450 patients at the most but now it cares for more than 800 patients, Sun Xirong, the vice president of the center, told the Global Times. She said that the majority of the patients had come to the hospital against their will, and 90 percent were suffering from schizophrenia. 

Sun led the Global Times reporter around the wards on the fifth floor of the building. The entire floor used to be hospital management offices but is now used for patients. Access to the floor requires an elevator smart card which lets people reach the floor where they need another key to open the iron-barred gate to the actual wards. 

In the wards there is no furniture - only beds closely packed next to each other so that the patients can only move around with difficulty. After lunch most of the patients were resting. 

Wang, a managerial officer from the center, explained: "Many of the 70 patients that could be discharged under the new law have lived in this hospital for more than a decade and are now quite stable." She said that many families refused to take their relatives home because they were afraid they might suffer relapses. Others just left the patients in the hospital because it was inconvenient to collect and care for them. 

Chen Dinghua, the center's president, told local media that patients from poor families were given an allowance from the government, and most of their medical bills were waived. "Families with financial difficulties only need to pay 12 yuan ($1.95) a day to cover their board."

Windows 8 was a radical departure. The Surface Pro rocks an i5 processor, which is the same chip that’s used to power most of today’s mid to high-end laptops. Unlike the lesser Surface RT tablet released in October, the Surface Pro runs the full version of Windows 8, which means it can run any program designed for Windows: Microsoft Office, Adobe CS Suite, Intuit programs like Quickbooks Pro or Quicken, just to name a few. And,Daltile bobblehead are available in a rainbow of colors. by the way, Microsoft One Note is really fun with a stylus.

The display is very nice. It has a full 1080p screen that gets even bigger (up to 2,550 x 1,440) when you connect it to an external display. The Surface Pro also comes with a USB 3.0 port, and has an external memory card slot, which is almost assuredly going to be used on a daily basis given the lack of free space after formatting and the restore partition has been allotted.

One other annoyance: the battery life on the Surface Pro is only about four hours. But since the device is WiFi only, the limitation can be worked around. Microsoft has already addressed concerns about the battery life and the space issue, though, and has also hinted that future accessories could improve the battery life.

If you’re in the market for a new PC, you suddenly have a new option. Instead of buying an Ultrabook for approximately $1,000, you can buy a Surface Pro with a keyboard for approximately $1,000. Not only are you buying a computer of similar power, but you’re also getting a high-end tablet bundled in the price.

Indoor map tech poses challenges

In an experiment with a mobile technology that has digital cartographers intrigued worldwide, the museum introduced a new "you are here" app feature this month that shows smartphone-toting visitors exactly where they are inside the museum.

If visitors opt in for the service, the app provides turn-by-turn directions to exhibits and delivers place-specific information about the objects near them.

Sounds of crickets and stomping noises from the app greet visitors who walk by the large Tyrannosaurus rex statute in the museum lobby. Puzzles, videos and IMAX trailers pop up throughout exhibits.

Using visitor traffic pattern data, the museum will determine the popular exhibits and where more internal advertising should go, says Jennifer Grant Warner, the museum's chief programming officer. "A lot of content and cool stuff are left on the cutting-room floor," she says.One of the most durable and attractive styles of flooring that you can purchase is ceramic or porcelain tiles. "Taking it to mobile devices gives a way to layer that information. I hope it convinces people to stay longer in the museum."

The museum also plans to add revenue-driving features in the future, including an alert for a free drink coupon when the café has fewer than 10 customers.

GPS is mostly useless indoors, so the the technology designers — a group that includes Cisco Systems, Qualcomm and indoor map developer Meridian — relied on Wi-Fi access points to detect the smartphones within their coverage area in the museum. The museum doubled the number of the Wi-Fi access points within the building to enhance accuracy.

Fernbank joins a growing number of institutions with lots of indoor space that are experimenting with the niche technology of indoor mapping. Because much of the outdoors — at least in the developed world — has been thoroughly mapped, digital cartographers view indoor space as an untapped but potentially lucrative field for delivering navigation, pushing out location-relevant information and promoting deals.

Facilities that can be challenging to navigate — hospitals, convention centers, universities, shopping malls, theme parks,A specialized manufacturer and supplier of dry cabinet, sports stadiums, school systems, large office buildings and airports — are dabbling with tools offered by about 40 companies and start-ups that have indoor mapping products,High quality stone mosaic tiles. according to a recent report by Gartner.

Though approaches vary widely, tapping Wi-Fi networks to triangulate a position, called Wi-Fi fingerprinting, seems to be the most widely pursued technology.

Some products, such as Meridian's map for The Venetian hotel in Las Vegas and the subway system in New York, don't need GPS or Wi-Fi signals but require users to specify their starting points and destinations for directions.

Other technologies, such as one from Nokia, propose maximizing the phone's Bluetooth capability by adding proprietary beacons or signal devices inside a building to capture location. The tools that reside in smartphones, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and step counters, also supply position information in relation to surrounding objects. Hyper-location detection gets better as these sensors get better, says Scott Pomerantz, general manager of GPS at Broadcom, which makes navigational tools for phone manufacturers.

Analysts caution that the technology is still immature, with high costs and accuracy issues keeping more prospective customers on the sidelines. Adding more Wi-Fi access points and other hardware is expensive. Most indoor positioning systems, even using Wi-Fi, still miss the precise location by several feet. And there aren't enough high-end smartphones in the market that can handle indoor positioning.

All companies in the market "have trade-offs in terms of accuracy," wrote Annette Zimmermann, an analyst at Gartner, in a recent report. Server connection, maintenance and the time it takes to deploy the technology also remain barriers, she says.

But the possibility of precisely tracking hordes of people as they move about indoors renders so many commercial opportunities that the technology could be — like GPS — "the foundational technology for a new ecosystem of businesses," says Dan Ryan, chief technology officer of ByteLight, a Boston start-up pursuing its own solution to indoor mapping using LED light bulbs. "The indoor map is going to be just as big."

Attesting to the potential, Google has pushed its software tools to businesses and institutions to make their own maps. The tech giant has collected 10,000 maps — including many U.S. airports, Ikea and the Smithsonian American Art Museum — that have been integrated into Google Maps. "Things are accelerating very quickly. This is the year when indoor maps became real," says Cedric Dupont, product manager of indoor maps for Google.

Microsoft's Bing Maps, which launched indoor maps in 2010, has 3,100 maps in 13 categories, including airports and stores.

Start-ups Wifarer,Find detailed product information for howo spare parts and other products. Micello, Meridian, Point Inside and MapEverywhere have also opened shop in recent years to grab their niche in the market. "We bet that every interesting building will have its own map," says Ankit Agarwal, CEO of Micello, a developer of software for making indoor maps.

For some institutions, their foray into indoor maps is limited to a desire to create basic navigational tools. The public school district in Fort Lee, N.J., sent a photocopy of its blueprints for three schools to MapEverywhere. The map software firm converted them to detailed floor plans with critical infrastructure information and points of interest that can be accessed by firefighters' and first-responders' smartphones.The term 'hands free access control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag.

In January, Miami Children's Hospital plans to introduce a map on its app for patients traversing its maze of connected buildings.

But large retailers, with customers willing to spend money but often having trouble finding items, are the most eager adopters. Earlier this month, Macy's announced that shoppers of its Herald Square store in New York can download its app to find their position in the store — represented by a blue-dot — and receive turn-by-turn directions to departments and brands in the building. Meridian, which developed the map, claims "3 to 5 feet of accuracy."

While some may scoff at the notion of customers needing a map in a shop, about 20% of retail sales are lost because shoppers can't find items, estimates Nathan Pettyjohn, CEO of Aisle411, an app with 9,000 store maps.

Mobile apps are also becoming a key sales channel and are ideal tools for coupon distribution and bar code scanners. Adding a map on top of these features allows stores to target promotions more directly at relevant locations. Nudging customers to share what they buy also gives retailers valuable data for merchandising, inventory control and personalized deals.

"Maps are quickly becoming more valuable than a navigational tool. The underlying information has strong value for commerce," says of Nick Such, CEO of BuildingLayer, a tech firm that converts indoor floor plans to digital maps.

Walgreens partnered with Aisle411 to list store layouts in the Aisle411 app. Customers can make shopping lists, and the items are spotted on their store's map. Walgreens recently embedded the feature in its own app.

For Black Friday, Walmart expanded last year's program of distributing paper store maps by installing digital versions in its app. Meijer, a retail chain in the Midwest, also uses a mapping technology from Point Inside that shows the location of searched-for items on a map.

"The traditional methods for the preparation of VO2 thin films are gas-phase reactions, such as sputtering or chemical vapor deposition," Yanfeng Gao, a professor at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS), explains to Nanowerk. "These methods can grow VO2 with fine controlled thickness and homogeneity, however, low visible transmittance due to intrinsic absorption of VO2 and unacceptable solar energy modulation ability pose significant drawbacks. There are only very few reports on the chemical deposition of VO2 films using – for example – sol-gel process, but the quality of film is still not satisfactory. We are aiming to develop a process that can finally commercialize VO2. We selected our method to control the crystalline phase and morphology, and also optical properties."

To prepare their nanoporous thermochromic VO2 films with low optical constants and tunable thicknesses, the team used a polymer-assisted deposition technique, resulting in single-layered VO2 films.

"When we measured the spectral transmittance and reflectance of our VO2 films, we found that by increasing their porosity we could increase their solar modulating ability without decreasing the luminous transmittance," says Gao. "Another interesting phenomenon that we found is that the changes in luminous transmittance across the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) are thickness dependent. For thin-films, the visible transmittance at 20°C is generally lower than that at 90°C and, vice versa. However, the visible transmittance at 20°C for our 100 nm thick films exceeds that at 90°C."

Experimenting with various thicknesses, the team found that the optimized thickness for films prepared by their technique to balance luminous transmittance and solar modulating ability is 100 nm. As Gao points out, a single-layer film of this thickness shows comparable luminous transmittance and solar modulating ability values to those of five-layered TiO2/VO2/TiO2/VO2/TiO2 films with optically optimized structures.

"The change of the optical constants of VO2 across the MIT can effectively modulate the infrared transmittance and shift the position of the reflectance valley at 20°C, leading to a significant enhancement of the infrared modulating ability at a certain wavelength," says Gao.

Since that paper [pdf] (by Roy Spencer and William Braswell) has been pretty thoroughly debunked in places like RealClimate and ClimateProgress, I will focus on the rest of the segment.

Next up was a Rasmussen poll finding that 69 percent of Americans believe scientists have lied to support their theories about global warming. Viewers, I suspect, are intended to receive this result as an indictment of global warming science. But hold on a minute. Suppose you're convinced that global warming is "manmade" and that skeptics are cooking the books to advance their viewpoint, would you not answer yes to that question? And so I'm not at all sure what this poll means.

Meteorologist Bastardi Takes Center Stage

Following the brief poll discussion the really good stuff begins. For the "real story" and "the facts" the morning hosts bring on meteorologist Joe Bastardi, the chief forecaster of the consulting firm WeatherBell.

After a quick recap of the recent record-breaking hot weather and why it's not a sign of global warming (with Bastardi making note of what he claims was the "far worse climate" of the '30s-'50s), the meteorologist makes his case for "Why CO2 Can't Cause Warming."
