What Would You Do If You Got Superpowers?

When I was a young boy, I yearned for super powers. After watching The Adventures of Superman on TV, starring George Reeves as the Man of Steel, I would put on my t-shirt with a big ‘S’ on the front, tie a towel around my neck as a cape, and make every effort to fly around the house. On more than one occasion, I actually prayed and asked God to give me super powers. I promised to use them to help people. But, mostly, I just wanted to fly. Thankfully, I did not have the privilege of watching shows like Jackass, which might have encouraged me to try flying off the roof. Consider the case of the Green Lantern in the recent movie called, sensibly enough, Green Lantern. I won’t be spoiling much by telling you that this movie tells the story of Hal Jordan, a self-centered and obnoxious fighter pilot who is chosen by a magic ring to become a Green Lantern, a guardian of justice and harmony in the universe. Right before our very eyes, a man who might best be described as a jerk becomes a virtuous, wise, selfless hero who is willing to die for the sake of others. Yet, the movie gives us very little reason to believe that this should have happened. It seems more plausible to believe that a man was endowed with astronomical superpowers than that he instantly changed his entire character and value system. My son, the one of boyhood Superman fame, warned me that Green Lantern wasn’t a good film. I should have heeded his warning.

Some movies try to provide a rationale for their superhero’s exemplary character. Spider-Man, for example, tells the story of a young man who was raised in a loving, moral family. When, after receiving his arachnid-like powers, he uses them for selfish purposes, he pays a high price in the death of his beloved uncle, a death he could have prevented with less self-absorption. Plus, Uncle Ben left Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man with sage advice, “Remember, with great power. comes great responsibility.”

The 2011 film, Captain America, tries in a different way to explain the moral fiber of its superhero. In this case, Steve Rogers, who becomes Captain America through he wonders of science, is chosen precisely because of his ethical standards. He is courageous, with a strong sense of justice, and a lack of desire to kill people, even the bad guys. Thus, the willingness of Captain America to give up his own life for others makes sense.

The recent movie, Chronicle, tells a different story altogether. When three high-school aged boys gain superpowers, at first they continue to be more or less the same boys. Their personalities don’t change. Nor do their values. They do not envision using their powers to help others. Rather, they simply want to enjoy their superhuman endowments and, if possible, become more popular with their peers, especially girls. But in one of the boys, the one whose family is painfully dysfunctional, superpowers simply magnify his own moral confusion. He is not miraculously transformed into a superhuman do-gooder. Rather, he becomes dangerous, a genuine mortal threat.

A brand-new bicycle repair shop has opened in Bedford-Stuyvesant just in time for the year's prime season of two-wheeled tooling around.

“But after 500, you kind of get better at it,” he said with a sarcastic laugh.

Already, Bike Slug is like walk-in doctor’s office. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, bikers were steadily streaming through, looking for Picca’s handywork, a band-aid for a small bruise. The small fixes, he was able to take care of in 5-10 minutes.

Metal undergoes novel transition under extreme pressure

Iron oxide was subjected to conditions similar to those at the depth where the Earth's innermost two layers meet.

At 1,650C and 690,000 times sea-level pressure, the metal changed the degree to which it conducted electricity.

But, as the team outlined in Physical Review Letters, the metal's structure was surprisingly unchanged.

The finding could have implications for our as-yet incomplete understanding of how the Earth's interior gives rise to the planet's magnetic field.

While many transitions are known in materials as they undergo nature's extraordinary pressures and temperatures, such changes in fundamental properties are most often accompanied by a change in structure.

These can be the ways that atoms are arranged in a crystal pattern, or even in the arrangement of subatomic particles that surround atomic nuclei.

A team at the Carnegie Institution for Science subjected the material to pressures up to 1.4 million times atmospheric pressure at sea level, and temperatures up to 2,200C.

They found that it pulls off the trick of changing its electrical properties without any shifting of shape - it can be an insulator or conductor depending just on temperature and pressure.

Combined with computer simulations of just what was going on with the material's electrons, the group claim that the results show a new type of metallisation.

"At high temperatures, the atoms in iron oxide crystals are arranged with the same structure as common table salt," said Ronald Cohen, a co-author of the study. "Just like table salt, iron oxide at ambient conditions is a good insulator—it does not conduct electricity."

"Our new results show, instead, that iron oxide metallises without any change in structure and that combined temperature and pressure are required. Furthermore, our theory shows that the way the electrons behave to make it metallic is different from other materials that become metallic."

A mixture of magnesium and iron oxide makes up much of the Earth's mantle - the solid layer just outside the planet's liquid outer core. The fact that iron oxide behaves as a metal means it will electrically link the core and mantle, affecting the way the magnetic field makes its way to the Earth's surface and beyond.

How Can I Avoid Static Electricity Shocks in Cold, Dry Weather?

Without going too deeply into an electrostatics lesson, it's important to know what causes those static shocks so you can start avoiding them. Static electricity "refers to the build-up of electric charge on the surface of objects"—essentially, when electrons move from one surface to another through contact. If the surfaces are both insulators, they'll build up an electrical charge. One object will have a positive charge (because it lost electrons) and one will have a negative charge (because it gained electrons). If one of the charged objects then touches a conductor, like a piece of metal, the charge will neutralize itself, causing a static shock.

What does this mean for you? Well, you have a lot of insulators in your home, like the rubber soles of your shoes and that wool carpet in the living room. When you walk on that wool carpet, your body then builds up a charge it can't get rid of through the insulating soles of your shoes. Then, when you touch that metal doorknob... you know what happens. Dry air is also an insulator, so static electricity is even more common during the dry winter months.

One of the easiest ways to avoid static shock is to pay attention to what you're wearing and what kind of fabrics make up the furniture in your house. For example, Electrostatics.net notes that rubber-soled shoes are great insulators, and will build up a lot of static in your body when combined with a wool or nylon carpet. Instead, try walking around in leather soled shoes, or cotton socks instead of wool socks. Leather soled shoes are also great for grocery shopping, since shopping carts can often cause lots of static electricity.

Similarly, wool sweaters are common offenders, especially in the dry winter (when you usually wear them). If you sit in a chair made out of the right fabric, you'll build up quite a bit of static. Again, cotton is going to be much more friendly, so try wearing cotton clothes when you want to avoid nasty shocks. Certain furniture covers or antistatic sprays can help alleviate this problem, too.

You may have also noticed that often, when you get out of your car, you get a shock when you touch the door. You might have even heard that touching the door frame as you get out of the car can help, and that's true. Make sure you start holding the metal frame before you get out of the car, and you keep touching it until you're out of the seat completely. If you forget to do this, you can also touch the car door with your keys. Since the electricity will discharge through them, you won't feel a shock.

Research aims to replace silicon with graphene

A team of researchers from the University of Manchester demonstrate how graphene could be encapsulated, sandwiching two sheets of graphene with another two-dimensional material, boron nitride. The four-layered structure aims to replace the silicon chip in computers.

Because there are two layers of graphene completely surrounded by the boron nitride, this has allowed the researchers for the first time to observe how graphene behaves when unaffected by the environment. Leonid Ponomarenko, the leading author on the paper, said, "Creating the multi-layer structure has allowed us to isolate graphene from negative influence of the environment and control graphene's electronic properties in a way it was impossible before."

"So far people have never seen graphene as an insulator unless it has been purposefully damaged, but here high-quality graphene becomes an insulator for the first time." The two layers of boron nitrate are used not only to separate two graphene layers but also to see how graphene reacts when it is completely encapsulated by another material.

"Leaving the new physics we report aside, technologically important is our demonstration that graphene encapsulated within boron nitride offers the best and most advanced platform for future graphene electronics. It solves several nasty issues about graphene's stability and quality that were hanging for long time as dark clouds over the future road for graphene electronics. "We did this on a small scale but the experience shows that everything with graphene can be scaled up." "It could be only a matter of several months before we have encapsulated graphene transistors with characteristics better than previously demonstrated."

I-40 - Risking life, limb and logos for free stuff

I stood with the StarNews marketing team at the base of the stands in Legion Stadium, taunting high school fans at the BB&T Jamboree with miniature, squishy foam footballs with StarNewsVarsity printed on the side.

Rarely does one get to experience the power of standing before thousands of people and possessing the one thing they all want.

I ignored the teenagers leaning over the railing, begging for a freebie. No, I thought, I decide how to distribute the footballs and I will throw them into crowded areas where people will knock each other down trying to catch a 60-cent football. I will chuck them high into the stands, into the top rows where people will be awed by my squishy football throwing accuracy.

OK, so a few balls missed their target areas. Somebody may have lost a drink in the process and I may have had to duck when that somebody retaliated by whizzing a squishy football back at me with superior accuracy and speed.

But that's irrelevant. The bottom line is that people love free stuff. They love collecting it, and they love competing for it. Some of us will proudly wear our Master Flow baseball cap to a restaurant simply because it was free.

Ezell and Ann Willard have built a business on that premise.

If anybody wants to put a logo on anything, the Willards can help. At the Welcome Show in early September at the Wilmington Convention Center, about 97 percent of the companies were selling coffee, 48 percent were selling food service products and 28 percent were selling microbrews. Then, there were the Willards. In their booth, everything was a prototype of something they sell.

They had plenty of promotional ink pens – on their web site, they sell more than 1,000 styles of pens, ranging from the Gala Plunger Action Pen (it's actually useless for unclogging toilets) to the Push-Pull Neck Pen (which has no chiropractic value whatsoever).

Pens, Ezzell said, used to be among the most popular items. Today, it's the beverage insulator, or beer huggie.

Ezzell wondered if that was a sign of the changing economy, and then pointed out that one particular huggie had a logo on the bottom. Whenever someone tips up a drink, the marketing campaign is still working.

The Willards also distribute mouse pad puzzles, collapsible flower vases and more than 1,000 types of stress relievers, from the Foam Kidney (buy two and donate one to a family member) to the Shark Horror Ball (squeeze it and watch the human body parts spill out of its mouth).

All these fun toys got me to thinking that I should order some I,40 promotional materials. I know I have plenty of pens and several huggies stashed in drawers. But I have noticed that sometimes my buns get cold. So I think I'm going to slap an I,40 logo on the 2-Slice Toaster & Bun Warmer and order them in bulk.

Three timely tips for aging well

Do you ever wonder about how aging is going to affect you? Do you worry about creaking joints, thinning hair and maladies of all sorts creeping up on you like a garden vine run amok twisting you into some ungodly hardly recognizable version of yourself?

It's no surprise that most of us don't look forward to aging.

When we aren't ruminating about getting older we lament about the loss of our youth.

Have no fear there is good news coming out of research on aging, which talks about building cognitive reserve as an insulator to the effects of aging.

Dr. David Bennett, who directs the Alzheimer's Disease Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, describes "something scientists call "cognitive reserve" — extra brain capacity. It compensates for whatever damage is accumulating."

Dr. Bennett goes on to say, "Having a purpose in life, conscientiousness, social networks, stimulating activities — all these things seem to be protective in terms of how your brain expresses whatever pathology it's accumulating."

I think this is great news because these variables are all things that we can work to develop.
