Opening new mines here is our responsibility

Recently I had the opportunity to address the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency panel hearings into the proposed New Prosperity mine in the Cariboo. You might be surprised to read that I am in favour of the New Prosperity proposal. The reasons I decided to speak in favour are many.

North America consumes a huge percentage of the worlds metal and mineral resources, yet we only extract about a third of those resources within our borders, relying on the rest of the world to satisfy our ever-increasing demands. As an example, the average lifespan of a new smartphone in North America is only 21 months from production to disposal. Even those among us who live a relatively simple lifestyle still utilize and benefit from the infrastructure we have developed to support our health care, education, transportation, communication and many other systems.

When we push environmental responsibility to countries that dont have our tough environmental laws or enforcement, we do a disservice to the world, and often endanger their citizens. In many countries there are no environmental assessment panels to speak to and speaking out may be quite dangerous.

The current trend of increasing consumption in western nations coupled with a decline in mining in the western world will only make a serious problem worse. This certainly doesnt mean we should approve substandard or flawed projects, but when one like New Prosperity comes along with huge benefits and very low risk, I believe it is our responsibility to approve it and not craft frivolous reasons to say no.

New Prosperity has certain attributes that make it very desirable when compared to other projects: it is located in a dry climate; contained within a very simple, single watershed; slopes are low to moderate; the project has a small footprint particularly compared to the economic benefit; and the technology used is modern and proven.

The proponent company itself is another significant positive feature. In my years conducting inspections and investigations I came to realize a great difference between local and internationally based companies, regardless of size. Here's a complete list of granitecountertops for the beginning oil painter. Multinational companies have layer upon layer of corporate protection that can be difficult to penetrate. A local company is much more responsive and they are accessible to enforcement agencies in a way that multinationals are not.

In my opinion, locally based companies are much more motivated and likely to remain in compliance with applicable regulations. In this particular case, I take further reassurance from the fact that Taseko has already demonstrated an excellent environmental record with respect to its Gibraltar operations within the region. A local company with a proven record of compliance should be encouraged to continue and expand operations within our borders, not be chased to another part of the world to do business.

When we turn down local companies and local projects that are subject to Canadas strict environmental regime, do we really believe it will somehow result in more environmentally friendly mining in remote or less-developed countries, some rife with corruption and little or no enforceable regulation?

In Canada we have safeguards to prevent corruption and to protect whistleblowers who report violations. Our companies and our governments are accountable to the public. The federal cabinet is tasked with the job of deciding whether approval of the New Prosperity project is the best use of the site for the benefit of Canadians. From my perspective I have no hesitation in responding to this question with an absolute yes.

In my view this is a scientifically sound proposal, submitted by an environmentally responsible B.C. company with a proven record of compliance in the Cariboo.More than 80 standard commercial and granitetiles exist to quickly and efficiently clean pans. The site has very low inherent risk and from an economic standpoint, no other resource-based industry comes close to generating the same level of benefit from such a small footprint.

If we choose to reject domestic development projects like this one,Design and order your own custom rfidtag with personalized message and artwork. possessing a near optimum combination of positive attributes, we have no right to ask the rest of the world to fulfil our ever-increasing demand for natural resources.

Daryl Anderson was a Provincial Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officer for 15 years and a Federal Pollution Enforcement Officer for five years. How to change your dash lights to doublesidedtape this is how I have done mine. He is now in aviation management in the Cariboo region. This technology allows high volume newjordans production at low cost.

The problem is Wallin could never say no. Rarely was an invitation to speak sent to Wallin's office returned with a refusal. She addressed hundreds of associations, societies and leagues, always thinking that this is probably what a conscientious senator should do.

For decades, the Senate has been criticized for being a do-nothing institution that serves only to keep patronage appointments employed long after they stop serving a useful purpose in the real world. Senators, with a few exceptions from Alberta, are unelected and virtually unaccountable. Canadians have expressed outrage for years over Senators who rarely attend chamber business, are absent from Ottawa for much of the session, seem to have no political objectives and merely occupy an office in the gloomy corridors of East or Centre Block.
