The Newport Beach City Council will discuss the city’s 30,000-plus trees during a Study Session meeting to be held Tuesday afternoon.customized letter logo earcap with magnet. The Council also will discuss whether to adopt a new ordinance that restricts picketing in residential neighborhoods at its regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, according to online agendas. The Study Session, which begins at 4:30, will include an overview of “all things Urban Forest,” according to an email from City Manager Dave Kiff.
“We have pages of policies that guide how we manage this ‘urban forest,’” Kiff’s email said. “Council Member Gardner and others have asked for a presentation and discussion on several aspects of forest management – species choices for replacement trees,Most modern headlight designs include tmj. tree trimming cycles, size choices for replacement trees, how we can avoid ‘all the trees getting old and dying/needing replacement at once,’ how trees are deemed to be in need of removal (the city manager has to sign off on every tree removal individually – unless it’s an emergency removal.”
“When we moved to CdM over 50 years ago, the CdM Village urban forest was the envy of all of the rapidly growing new communities in Orange County,” Yeo wrote in a letter to Council members. “Unfortunately due to age, disease, liability, policies, etc. we have less and less street trees & our village is loosing its charm and character. Newer communities such as Irvine now have a superior streetscape.”
The regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m., will include a possible change to the city’s municipal code that would establish a 300-foot “buffer zone” around a residence to protect residents from picketers.
“The courts have allowed buffer zones in some cases, and the Council will consider the first reading (meaning it will come back again one more time for second reading) of an ordinance that would make Newport Beach a place with a 300’ residential picketing buffer zone limitation,” Kiff’s email said.
Gardner requested that the Council discuss the possible code change after a recent demonstration in front of a home in the Westcliff area, Kiff’s email said.
The meeting also includes an item on the consent calendar that would change an existing agreement with a company managing parking at Big Corona State Beach and the Balboa Pier area parking lots. The City has a permit pending with the California Coastal Commission that would allow parking kiosks to be added at the lots, but until the city gets a permit or a “related waiver,” which could take several months, the change would create a fee structure for managing the parking lots. Now it's possible to create a tiny replica of Fluffy in handsfreeaccess form for your office.
