Rehabilitation the way to go

It sounded like the plot of a best-selling novel or the screenplay for a blockbuster movie. Instead, the chilling story of abuse was relayed in a local church hall to an audience of just a dozen or so women who turned out to learn about domestic abuse from the local perspective.

The event was hosted by the Business and Professional Women’s Club as part of the 16 Days of Activism celebrated from November 26 – December 10. Those in attendance learnt about the Club and the services it offers, its programmes and activities, as well as the various forms of domestic abuse and how it can manifest itself. One of the most impactful presentations of the evening came from a survivor of domestic abuse, who now serves as an advocate against domestic abuse. As she recounted her harrowing ordeal, she stoically stated: “If by sharing my story I can stop one woman from going through what I experienced, I would be good.”

However, as her chilling tale unfolded, one could not help but wonder – will she really be alright? Harassed out of her job, stalked,The term 'hands free access control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag. verbally and physically assaulted, having to pull her children out of school, receiving death threats and eventually multiple gunshot wounds from the same man who was once her partner, one question instantly came to mind: How does one feel safe after experiencing such trauma?

The survivor’s testimonial revealed that she had indeed gone to the authorities for protection, but was met with numerous obstacles. On some occasions, the first point of contact did not always take her predicament seriously. Later on, the length of time it took to process an order of protection extended her torment, as did the fact that a piece of paper could do little to protect her when face to face with her armed assailant.

But perhaps the most striking part of her entire story was the revelation that her attacker has served out his sentence and had recently been released from prison. The audience was genuinely concerned about the survivor’s reaction to this latest development. She expressed a resigned determination to do the best she could.

Very often, rehabilitation is seen in the light of re-tooling the inmate with a marketable skill so that he or she can re-integrate into the workforce and become a productive member of society. Similarly, we understand that there is also treatment available for those inmates who may suffer from substance abuse. However, we believe that more light should be shed on what is being done to work with individuals who would have been convicted of violent crimes where the very real possibility exists that they and their victim may one day come face to face. It is not hard to imagine the feelings of resentment and anger that may build up towards someone who is the cause of one’s incarceration – unless efforts are made to counsel the perpetrator and prevent them from seeking retribution upon their release.

Very often, we think that when someone has been convicted and sentenced, that justice has been served. But it is not simply a case of locking them up and throwing away the key. Many of them will one day re-enter society and the impact this may have on their victims should not be forgotten.

Near the main south entrance to Titanic Belfast, visitors can see SS Nomadic,The term 'hands free access control' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag. the tender ship which served Titanic on her maiden voyage, carrying first and second class passengers from the port of Cherberg to the ship. Over the years she has also carried such people as Charlie Chaplin, Margaret (Molly) Brown Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to other Harland & Wolff (H&W) ships like Oceanic, Olympic, Caronia, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. The SS Nomadic has since been returned to Belfast and as the last remaining ship of the White Star line, she is undergoing a major restoration project to return her to her former glory. When complete, she too will open as a visitor attraction.

Just 10 metres from Titanic Belfast are the historic slipways where the Titanic and Olympic were first launched into the water. The steel posts on both sides of each slipway are inset with vertical lights and the outline of the two ships on the slipways are also inset with a blue lit glass giving a 3D effect at night. To the east entrance of Titanic Belfast is the original red brick building, the H&W Drawing Offices where Titanic and her sister ships – Olympic and Britannic - were conceptualised and designed. This building is also being restored. A short stroll away is also another must-see site – the Titanic’s dry dock, where the ship last sat on dry ground. Inside the pump house, visitors can see the gargantuan hydraulic accumulator and the original pumps that could empty the massive dock in only 100 minutes.
Another attraction nearby is the Titanic Studios, a film production facility.A Swansea Council spokesman apologised to the family over the situation and promised to carry out further repairs at the property.

Mr Hewitt said he was now optimistic of moving into the Tyle Teg property before Christmas.

He said: "I've had a plasterer called Jamie get in touch who gives up a day a month to help people out and the council has started to do more work in the house.

"I am speechless actually at the way people want to help and I am surprised with the response.

"I was in the pub on the night that the story went into the paper and there was an old gentleman who bought me and my wife a drink."

He added: "We are hoping to move into the house in the next two weeks — the story has made a big difference." The former soldier, who served nine years in the Army on tours to Iraq and Kosovo, said he had seen "better mud huts in Iraq" compared with the council house.

He initially got in touch with Swansea Council three months ago about finding a new home in the city and was pleased they had responded so quickly. But he claimed he wasn't immediately given the key to the property and that nothing was done about repairing or painting the house.

He said there were a series of problems with the house, including that all the walls needed fixing, the lounge wall had old wallpaper held up by sticky tape, there was no carpet on the floor and there was also no gas and electricity at the property. We are pleased to offer the following list of professional mold maker and casters.Whether you are installing a floor tiles or a shower wall,
