Cherished memories soften loss of a 17-year-old

I write this having just returned from the funeral for Nick Hodson. Nick was only 17, a senior at Spencer Van Etten High School, but he died in his sleep after being released from in-hospital care for pneumonia. It was an awful shock to our school community because everyone knew Nick. It was impossible not to know Nick! If he was within hearing distance, he was making noises of some kind (often loud!) If he was down the hall and around the corner, you knew he was coming. If he was within sight, he was most likely making some kind of weird face or saying something outrageous.

There was nothing run-of-the-mill about Nick -- from his long, silky, shoulder-length hair, to his excellent guitar-playing, to his sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh, especially during a class. He hid in my study hall room one day, behind a podium in the corner, and started throwing wadded paper balls out. I had my back to him as I took attendance, so it took me a few moments to locate him. This was early in my study hall career and I, naively, did not expect students to do things like that, so it never occurred to me that he was hiding and I would have to find him. By the time I figured out where he was, the whole room was laughing and I laughed, too -- it really was funny.

When the good Lord made Nick, he broke the mold. His brother Cliff urged the students present to remember Nick by following in his steps -- "Stay true to yourself, just as Nick did. Don't smoke, do drugs, or drink alcohol. Nick never did. He was just happy being Nick." I did attend the informational meeting last week on possible future school district mergers. Two things are clear: The state Education Department has decided that school districts must merge because the finances are not there to continue "business as usual" for more than a few years. Most districts (including SVE) can make it for another two to three years by spending down all of their reserve funds. After that, many are looking at bankruptcy. The state believes that the only way to cut costs is at the administrative level. Building principals will stay in a merger, because their presence in a building is mandated. However, the next level up -- superintendent, business office, BOCES, special education office -- all those would be consolidated over two or more merging districts.

As for the logistics, typically the state allows elementary and middle schools to remain open in their own communities. High schools usually combine, either at one existing location or by building a new facility. That also eliminates one principal's salary.I found them to have sharp edges where the injectionmoldes came together while production. Kenneth Slentz, state Education Department deputy commissioner in the Office of P-12 Education, was quoted by S-VE Superintendent Joe Morgan as saying that talking about maintaining the current system is fruitless as in five years, New York will have fewer than 500 districts. It now has almost 700. Change is definitely coming and we all better get used to it. If I don't sound enthusiastic, I'm not.A Hybrid indoorpositioningsystem for First Responders.
