Chef Laurent Baillon to appear at Chocolate Festival

The culinary students in chef Laurent Baillon’s chocolate class sit with rapt attention as he demonstrates how to pour liquid chocolate into a mold. Many are learning to cook with chocolate for the first time, some are brushing up their skills for an appearance at the first-ever Inland Empire Chocolate Festival on Saturday.

“The students will be making candies in front of everyone and will be creating a chocolate showpiece built around a real metate (Native America grinding stone),” said Baillon, who teaches a variety of cooking classes at the Art Institute’s San Bernardino campus.

The Ontario festival will showcase a host of local businesses from the confectionary world by providing samples and selling their products to the more than 2,500 people expected to attend, said Helen Denning of Plan Ahead Events in Rancho Cucamonga. The organization is coordinating the event, which will give proceeds to Back to School JAM, an annual event at which backpacks filled with school supplies are given to local children.

Ghiradelli, Godiva, Helen Grace Chocolates, Ciel Chocolatiers, Smiles Sweet Shop, Stoli vodka and D’Marie will all be represented at the show.

Baillon’s class will be the only participants demonstrating skills at the event.

Baillon learned his chocolate-making skills in his native France, having grown up in a restaurant family in Normandy. He initially trained with his father, who ran a hotel and restaurant for 40 years. At age 16, he went to Paris for a three-year apprenticeship as a pastry chef.

You never know how a visit to NPE can change your future. Just ask Richard Landis, one of the new class of Plastics Hall of Fame inductees. “I always felt that I’d be buying somebody else’s trouble, if we bought anybody else. Because my feeling was, if a company was for sale, they were not able to handle it, or had problems,” he said.

Henry Landis’ do-it-yourself mindset is how the family got into the plastics business. When he re-tiled his home’s bathroom and kitchen, he got lots of compliments. Meanwhile, Richard, who was a tile setter for his father’s business, and his wife Bonnie were expecting their third child. He ordered plans from Popular Mechanics and built the family a ranch-style house, with help from other tradesmen.

I also want to recognize a long-time friend, the governor of the great state of Maryland, Martin O’Malley. And I understand that we have delegates from the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference, from schools literally around the world, including some Fulbright scholars. More local women pursuing STEM work

Fewer women are pursuing education in high-tech fields even though employers say they have more of these better-paying positions than candidates to fill them.

Women have been underrepresented in STEM occupations for the last decade, steadily holding less than a quarter of the jobs, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Although women in STEM careers will earn one-third more than those in other jobs, the number of women nationwide attaining STEM associate degrees has dropped 26 percent since 2000.Why does moulds grow in homes or buildings? They represent 27.5 percent of STEM degrees and certificates.

The number of women earning certificates has fallen even further, by 50 percent during that time, according to the report.

Women hold also a disproportionately low number of STEM bachelor degrees, according to the commerce department.

Sinclair has seen an increase in female STEM graduates thanks to recruiting efforts and a strong female presence in its faculty.

The college had 21 more female graduates in STEM in 2010-11 than it did four years earlier. Sinclair had 44 female STEM graduates last year.

The percent of graduates who are female grew to 11 percent from 9 percent during that time. Overall, Sinclair’s student population is 57 percent female.

At Clark State, which has 70 percent female students overall, about 48 percent of graduates in the school’s STEM programs were women. “That’s something they can build on,” said Costello, who added the more women in the programs, the easier it is for other students to see them and imagine their own STEM careers.

New laws overturning Ind. Supreme Court decisions demonstrate balance

On a yellow sheet of paper torn from a legal pad, Indiana Supreme Court Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. keeps the list.

It's just four Supreme Court case names and four Indiana Senate bill numbers, but amid those words and numbers lies the balance of power between the state's judicial and legislative branches.

This year's General Assembly approved four measures signed into law by Gov. Mitch Daniels that overturned four 2011 rulings of the state's high court. In each case,Proxense's advanced handsfreeaccess technology. state law was clarified or changed in response to the court's interpretation of it.

"Three of them I thought they were wrong to do, and one of them I thought they were right to do," Sullivan said. "Each of them represents an interesting story of how the legislative and judicial branches interact."

Regarding the three law changes Sullivan objected to, Senate Enrolled Act 1 details individual self-defense rights following Barnes v. State, which said Hoosiers can never resist police. Senate Enrolled Act 97 redefines public intoxication in response to Moore v. State. Senate Enrolled Act 132 declares underground aquifers cannot be regulated by local governments.

On the other hand, Sullivan's dissent in Citizens State Bank v. Countryside formed the basis of Senate Enrolled Act 298, setting the priority of mortgage holders in a foreclosure action.

While Sullivan believes the Legislature did not need to act on the first three, he acknowledges it has the right to do so.

“We use this day to highlight environmental issues, and bees are a critical part of human life. There has been a problem with them dying in massive amounts,” said Rodgerson, adding that the theme was inspired by the documentary film, "Vanishing of the Bees."
